I was wondering if there was anywhere in act II to get the alghoul entry without paying 500 dollars for a book.  I guess the book has other entries so it makes it worth it, but you only get 150 gold for the quest, and i think 500 xp. I am low on cash in act II because I just bought the armor available at the dwarf blacksmith.

in chapter 1, you could get old ladies to talk about monsters. is that not true in act 2?

So far, I don't think I've managed to find any information for free about alghouls in the game, that might be one of the few books that you actually do have to purchase. I'll keep an eye out should i find any free information, but nothing yet  :)

Raid more trunks and barrels and sell stuff, it's actually extremely easy to gather 500 orens if you try even a little .. you can sell herbs and skinnable items to various merchants, of course any books you have read should be sold back to a merchant to recoup at least some cost if you bought them, or to make a little cash if they were given or found.

In practice, many of the 'kill X monsters' quests are not worth the money, since you could sell the body-parts you take from the monsters on the open market for as much or more than the reward - and for most of them, you can use the parts in alchemy, and the cost of buying them would be considerably more than the reward. You don't have to complete any of these quests. But if you do, of course, there may be an XP bonus as well as orens.

think of the Monoliths quest .. geralt shells out quite a bit, as well as during  the investigation ... can't think of every instance yet, but he has to pay Leuvaarden 500 orens for one lousy sephirot. "Raymond" extorts 200 from him, he must pay Vivaldi for one or both books (depending on previous game choices) ... are any of the quests actually financially rewarding ?

Maybe we should start a thread with the economics of the quests ... i think they are far more about ethical choices (or not, POV)  than money making ... In fact, i can't see how Geralt could make a living if he only charged what he does in the game relative to the going market prices of the stuff he needs to acquire :)

He'd just about be forced to be a thief

He's not forced to be a thief - that's just your kleptomania, Widow. I've got through the game stealing nothing but Grandma's lard and pickles. Gambling is lucrative, and so is fist-fighting. So is going out monster hunting and selling some of the proceeds, if you choose the right monsters. You can even make money just by picking flowers, although that may not be macho enough for some players.

I didn't either  .... I just led the Fleder (spawns near the dwarf blacksmith) to them.
Also got to pick up some nice Dwarf's axes that way also.
They sell for 80 orens IIRC.
Some say that Pirates steal, and should be feared and hated.

Drowners and ghouls drop Ginatz's Acid which you can sell for 15 Orens. A good deal in Act II and... there are plenty of drowners in several places as we may know.
I can see what you see not, Visions milky then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone, whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be, shadows move where light should be.

I suppose a few Quests are somewhat lucrative, but is that really the point? A few tips: ALWAYS read the books then SELL THEM! Even if you've already read a book you find, keep it to sell at the first opportunity. Keep the lower two weapon slots open as well so you can pick up and sell any swords, daggers or axes you find. It might not seem a lot picking up 10 oreos here and there, but coupled with money made from fist fighting and gambling, there's no reason to be broke. Right now I have just over a thousand orens, and need to raise at least another 5000 to buy the advanced armor, and even more to enhance my swords. It shouldn't take me all that long.

Notice that NOBODY ever stops you from raiding their cupboards and stealing everything that isn't nailed down? You are INTENDED to be somewhat of a sneak thief.

I've found that Thaler the fence is an excellent source of Orens won through Poker.  He's got money, and the starting bet is 110 orens.  Learn how to play Poker (as I had to, since I didn't know anything about the game before i started TW), find him and save your game before you initiate dialogue to play.  If you win, overwrite the save.  If you lose, just load and try again.  Ten minutes of this will bring you hundreds of Orens.  I usually set a goal of 1000-1500 Orens before I leave, and I haven't been disappointed.

One caveat:  Don't ask him about Salamandra or any of the other dialogue options before you play, because that will limit or perhaps block the amount you can win.  Do that later, after you've taken him for a ride!

and Ginatz Acids for 15

if one buys extra components for a silver skill point, these are very often found in bloedzuigers and drowners bodies.

a few rounds in the marches are worth > 1k orens
