Did you kill the Golem?

You need it's heart.

Do you have the right alcohol as base? You need top quality alcohol, look here, if you don't have one of these alcohols you can make a White Gull and use that.

if you do not have / know the formula, you can always experiment, but you only have one golem's heart and there is no way to get another, so minimally I'd save first

any potion or oil can be brewed by experimentation, but you can make some unintentionally lethal stuff that way, so beware!

As long as you know the correct formula you can create it. You will receive an unknown potion / unknown oil / unknown bomb. But when you consum / apply it, the recipes goes into your journal and you use the entitled product.

Does it record the failed potion recipes as well, or only the ones that worked? Cos I've made that many twitchy potions when I've been trying to make others, it's not funny. Just clicking the wrong ingredient mainly. 'Unknown potion' - what do you mean, unknown potion, I was brewing a Cat... wasn't I? have a swig, and oh, dammit, poison, and it killed me  :-\  Stupid potion...

sadly, failed is just failed, it doesn't leave a list of "do not brew" :)

I don't think it records any recipes other than those you get told via conversation and via reading scrolls and books. If you make a potion you don't have the recipe of, it just displays as unknown potion/oil/bomb and doesn't add an entry until you fulfill the earlier criteria.

It definitely records any successful recipe .. that's certain, no matter how you got it (recipe, conversation or experimentation)

Bugger, I could really use a 'do not brew' list. Even if it's only to give one of them as a gift

I went ahead and tested it:
-If you brew a valid unknown potion, it is not recorded unless you also drink it (then it is recorded)
-If you brew fisstech, it is immediately recorded without need to test it
-Have not tested oils/bombs yet

Interesting to know about fisstech :) ... i never checked and just got my poor Geralt wasted ! I've just added some notes to the wiki about it.

I can confirm that oils must be applied before the formulae appear in the journal, if they are created through experimentation

Great :)

It is interesting though that you will not get the potion/oil named when you use them while they are unknown unless you also brewed them though. I'll make that note in the wiki.

What he means is that, if you find an unknown potion or oil somewhere, instead of preparing it yourself, you won't get a journal entry if you use it. An example for this would be White Raffard's Decoction, which you can find before getting the recipe from Triss (don't remember where exactly, but I distinctly remember finding at least one vial in Act II).

Did this help to de-confuse (or defuse?) you? ;)
