Cannot load module. invalid IFO file
20.12.2007 @ 20:22 #1
This is a work-in-progress FAQ: http://www.thewitche...p?topic=17503.0 , do check it often as new tips are being added
Q: The game crashes when i try to leave the swap/cemetery or I get "Cannot load module. invalid IFO file", what can i do?
A: The issue is the one known as the IFO module error, you get that error when trying to to change zone (mostly in chapters 2 and 3).
To fix this, you need to make some manipulations, first, if you are under XP, go to my computer, get on your C drive, open the tools menu -> Folder options, View tab. In there, look for "Hidden files and folders", click on show hidden files and folder. Next look for "Hide protected operating system files", uncheck it.
If you are under Vista, go to the control panel and look for folder option, the rest of the procedure is the same : View tab. In there, look for "Hidden files and folders", click on show hidden files and folder. Next look for "Hide protected operating system files", uncheck it.
Now, start the game, and load your savegame. Once it is loaded, press ALT-Tab to get out of the game, go to the following folder:
Windows XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\The Witcher\temp\saves\<name of your savegame>
Windows Vista/7: C:\User\<your user name>\Application Data\The Witcher\temp\saves\<name of your save game>
In that folder, delete all the files that end with the .SAV extension.
Then go back in the game, move around a bit, save your game and reload it. The problem should be fixed.

Well, after waiting a month for the patch, the old "can't enter the Cemetery/can't enter the Sewers" problem persists.
Now, instead of CTD I get the above message, then get kicked back to the game main menu. I guess you could call that an improvement, but I still can't continue the game.
Anyone have a solution?

PS. I see that previous posts relating to this problem have been retired, without the problem being solved. Thanks Devs!

Hey Screeg,
Same problem! Loaded up my save file, attempted to enter cemetery, and got the "Cannot load module - invalid IFO file." Just for fun, I'm trying a full install and patching directly to 1.2 but I am doubtful.
Update: reinstall and direct patch from the retail, problem still exists. From the other thread, I (and others) have tried an exhaustive list of software and hardware modification to fix this. Until shown otherwise, it stands as The Witcher's problem. Yes, we could start another game (as others have succeeded in entering the locations) but we don't know what causes the glitch and would probably be prone to repeat the same story beats.
Pretty please look at this, I'm happy to provide any information that might be helpful.

Well, I'm convinced restarting is the only solution. The glitch might have "infected" the save game file, making any future fix unlikely.
Luckily, I'm not in any hurry to start over as I've been playing Mount & Blade. I highly recommend it. You can play for free until Level 6. If the Witcher is frustrating you, check it out.

If you register your game you might get a better response, as it'll rule out any problems being due to unofficial versions of the game :)
If they HAD an illegal copy they wouldn't have even got this far. As Mikul would not spawn and they would be stuck at chapter 1..........
I have a legal copy but because I live in Canada I don't even have a CD key....... :/
I'm not sure if this was said/tried, but try re-starting or going back to an earlier save game. If you don't have a save game that far back I am sure someone here may be able to help you out. Also try putting graphics settings to the absolute lowest. It's a long shot but it helped me a couple of times with other games.

We'll see if there's any advantage to registering ;)
Just attempted a bare minimum gfx setting (windowed and full screen), still get the IFO error. All evidence points towards a game problem and as noted, even starting anew may see a reoccurance.

Hello! This is my very first post here! :-)
I just want to say that I also have this problem: I've got the invalid IFO message on several times during the loading of a big area (Swamp, Sewers, Temple Quarter...) Until now I've just been loading earlier saved games, but now I am a bit tired and I've decided to wait until this problem gets solved. I hope the developers will take care of it!
Bye!

A fair comment, but not called for. It is not a requirement to register your game on this site to get a "better response".
Nor is it a requirement to be able to post a reply as you can see by my ability to do so. ;)
I havent yet registered my game because I choose not to. Nothing sinister....I just choose not to.
Unfortunately I am unable to help the OP as I have not encountered his problem.
I suspect it is a storyline bug so my only offer of help is for the OP to replay the game differently.
Perhaps someone who has progressed just past this stage may be able to send you a saved game so you can continue?
I cannot as I constantly delete my saved games and I am currently in chapter 5.

Hey, that's an option Stubbie, hadn't thought of that. Still it's not as wonderful as I'd like since the game is special for the unique effects the player has on the branching story. If anyone is willing, I'll take a save game that starts at chapter 3. Thanks! prokat@gmail.com is my e-mail address.
Still hoping we get a real fix to the bug. I opened a ticket but I know Scree's been down that road many times.

hi all.
taken form polish forum:
when experiencing ifo bug -
1. load the save just before bug occurs
2. go to the windows -> docs and settings/local settings/application data/the witcher/temp/save
3. delete every .sav files (marshlands, wyzimarich, wyzimapoor etc.)
4. go back to the game and save
5. exit to the main menu and load a new save.
worked for me - but the deleted .sav files contain location specific data. the game will replace the files with the default ones. it may cause problems when any quests are in progress. hope it will solve some problems.
cheers.

hi all
i just recieved a response from polish customer service CDP.
they confirmed that deleting a .sav files from temp folder may cause certain details dissappeared. quest progress, persons, objects.
the procedure may even change the plot outcome.
i wish you luck ::)

whenever i attempt to load into the trade district (where i have been previously on several occasions) after consulting Shani as to why sent Alvin to Triss i am unable to load back into the district as a message pops up telling me i cannot load the module.
i tried pursuing a few other quests instead, hoping it was a glitch, which didnt work. i then installed the latest patch and that didnt work either.
any advice would be appreciated.
