This skill is absolutely worth its skill point. Especially in combination with showing the object's names (in the game options or by pressing ALT) it allows you to collect dozens of alchemical ingredients of all colors within minutes. All you need then is alcohol and grease as bases for potions and oils.
Same with books: Buy all of them, read them and re-sell them. You'll get dozens of entries in your journal (formulas, monster info etc). Because you'll find more loot that you can use or sell afterwards, the books are worth the money, too. You'll still finish the chapter with more than 1,000 Orens.

1000?
i typically finish with at least 4000, this time 5500.
not hard if you just time your hunting and playing right.
kill every barghest you can find for skulls to sell to abigail (5 each).
whenever you enter the inn, do a round of fistfights (40), and gamble with zoltan (~200). same whenever you visit Odo (Odo is by far the worst dice player in the game, btw - you can win tons of cash off him easily).
the money starts piling up in no time, even if you are buying books and ingredients.
advantage is you can buy some decent armor right at the start of ch2, which comes in handy (dont' forget to sell your old armor for 500 first!).

I suspect that those who end up with lots of cash are saving before playing dice, then reloading and going again if they lose
but of course.
;)
However, it really doesn't take much reloading, as they are such lousy players in ch1.
btw, the patch is out!
