Is anyone having problems accessing the Steam store at the moment?
I know the forums are down, but can't see any reference anywhere online to store problems. (Support is OK, download servers are OK, store not accessible through any browser or through the client)

That's weird, I can't think of a logical explanation for this. Proxy cache somewhere that I don't know about? Strange and unusual routing that doesn't affect anyone else? I'll try it from somewhere else the next time I go out.

- 'K I can get in using a proxy, which means either DNS or routing, I suspect. I'll just wait it out for a couple of days.

My boyhood hero Sir Patrick Moore is dead, last of a dying breed of old fashioned englishman. Most well known for hosting the Sky at Night on the beeb for the last fifty five years, the planet has just become a little less interesting.
I have waited many years for the Incline to begin. False prophets I have followed and obscure lore perused, but always there has been nought but the bitter taste of disappointment at the end of my travails. Still I do not give up, I do not falter with weariness. Even if it should never come to pass I will still believe and search, for the Incline is beautiful and it SHOULD exist.

Let us also mark the passing of a great innovator in jazz music, Dave Brubeck. Play his funeral march in 7/4 time and see who can march to that.

Question for anyone who knows how the Internet works. When ISP routers cache DNS, how deep do they go? Would they just cache steampowered.com, or would they also cache store.steampowered.com? (Still wondering why this is only affecting a small number of people)

Most often this is a Stupid Windows Trick. Good implementations of DNS won't do that to you. But Windows is written by people who don't know DNS from a hole in the ground. It is very aggressive about negative caching (remembering hosts it can't reach), and Internet Explorer is even more so. Repeatedly trying to access a URL you know is there keeps renewing the negative cache.

On a Windows host, flush the resolver cache if you cannot reach a host you believe is up. At an administrative command prompt, give the command

ipconfig /flushdns

and try again.

Did it earlier (also checked the hosts file). It didn't help. :(
And I can't access through my cellphone either. (Same ISP, so it doesn't rule out a problem with them, but I've interpreted it as meaning it probably isn't my PC)

I get too attached to characters sometimes...

Tywin was my favorite character....better than all the other idiot contenders combined.

A little late-night food action.

Posted Image

St. James Cake (Torta Santiago) is my son's favorite. This one is totally non-traditional, but I had my wreath pan handy, and it's for a Christmas party, so it is what it is.

2-2/3 cup almond meal
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1-1/4 cup granulated sugar
4 large eggs
8 Tbsp (1 stick) butter
3/4 tsp baking powder (I use 1/2 tsp cream of tartar and 1/4 tsp baking soda)
Zest cut from 1 lemon (I had candied lemon peel handy, so I used that)
A little water (less than 1/2 cup)
1 cup icing sugar (powdered, confectioner's)
Sprinkles or whatever you like for decoration

Preheat oven to 350F. Butter a pan of whatever type you want to use (if I were being traditional, I'd use a skillet).

Cream butter and sugar until well blended. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Sift the flour and baking powder, and stir in. Do not overmix (so the flour won't get tough and bready). Stir in the almond meal and lemon zest. If the batter is too thick, add a little water. If the cook is too sober, add a little Amaretto.

Spoon into the pan, and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes, until a skewer comes out clean. Let it rest about 15 minutes at room temperature, then turn it out of the pan.

While the cake cools, beat the icing sugar with a little milk until it runs off the spoon in strands. Drizzle the icing over the cake, doing your best Jackson Pollock imitation. Decorate with sprinkles, sliced almonds, or whatever suits you. (The traditional decoration is a St. James cross, done in icing sugar.)

oooh that cake looks yummy ! I saw a suggestion awhile back that said we needed a thread devoted to recipes . I know we have had a few threads in the past that were related to holiday meals and so forth and tend to die rather quickly . I`m thinking of a thread where any and all recipes have a home but i`m not sure how the community feels about it . Feel free to share your opinions and ideas .

It was yummy. Now it's gone ;D

I would be for a recipes thread. We might have to set a ground rule about measures, because we have members using metric and members using "US customary".

Good point . Any volume converter should work for that i think . Could put a link for one in the first post . I`ve got a recipe for Salmon Loaf and Cucumber sauce that is simply scrumptious (gotta remember where i put it), Jam cake and Caramel Icing .

Gone...?! But...it was just.....I know the feeling though , make something sorta special, then company comes and when they leave the something special is gone too. :realmad:

Measurements types are OK as long as the person posting says what they're using. The biggest problem I've had historically is American vs Australian cups. I had a couple of disasters that way.

Setting up a thread. Back shortly.
