In one of the oddest promotions I've ever seen, my local GAME shop is offering a 40% discount on Crysis for anyone who trades in the Witcher. Who exactly is this aimed at? All those who bought the Witcher and discovered it wasn't actually an FPS? ???
Well it could be for those that thoute it was a FPS but I dont think so ;)
Could be just to much of one thing and not enough of the other for they can resale TW as a use game.
Now Im not saying one is better then the other mind you but it a good marketing ploy for Crysis.

I see what you mean in the first post, haha, there isnt that strong of a connection between The Witcher and Crysis really.
Although I have been waiting to buy Crysis for a few months, until I have played the Demo, I actaully found the game not so good. If I want FPS, I rather COD4.
But of course, nothing beats The Witcher IMO this winter.

Crysis is some of the most fun i've had in an FPS in a long time. I just don't enjoy the railroading of games like CoD or Halflife.
That being said Witcher is probably the best RPG I've played since Vampire Bloodlines and Planescape before that.
This month has been great for us multi style favoring gamers and I say to Hell with trade ins. I'll enjoy both games for many months to come, TYVM :)

lol that doesn't make any sense since game stores around the country i.e. Ebgames Game Rush etc, wont give you trade in credit/ value for Games for Windows PC games since they require a CD-key and Online Registration which makes it so they can't be playe don multiple pc's...
but hey if thats your game store thats weird they are doing that i wouldn't wanna give up witcher seeing as i just bought it today and pre-ordered crysis, they both seem like fantastic games not worth sacraficing one for the other unless it came with a 9800GTX card to play a CERTAIN game we all know...

I don't know, but I'd rather just take my money to Circuit City and buy Crysis for $40 this week.
And get a $10 gift card w/ that, too.
But, of course -- I'd rather wait for Crysis to drop in price.
Plus, I'd need to upgrade my GF6600 GT vid card to something that could run Crysis, too.

As far as not liking "games that railroad" like your examples crysis and halflife, i can understand crysis but putting down half-life is like putting down pc gaming in its entirety if you dont like THE biggest FPS to revolutionize the way we play fps's today then your not a true gamer. But thats my opinion maybe you just need to take the time to understand a game that "railroads" in your terms. I would take Half-life series over any game anyday if i want one of the best compelling storylines and fun online multiplayer and stellar graphics with well optimization.

HL is very cryptic, at times -- and they often don't tell you what and why something happened until the next installment or episode. It's very annoying, to leave so many cliffhangers and unanswered questions; it's as if they decided to follow the suit of the last two Matrix movies...
Personally, I don't think HL is that revolutionary. Sure, it tried to make story and character more important in gaming and the actual storytelling through dialogue in a better way, but it's not revolutionary in the gameplay department. It still follows the "you stick to this ONE linear path" style that have been in the FPS genre for probably way too long. Personally, I'd take Deus Ex, Bioshock, and FEAR over any of the HL's any day.
I think Bioshock tells their story much better than HL -- plus, you can really come up w/ some cool different character builds, each time around. I think Bioshock owes a lot of its roots to Sys Shock 2, though.
Though, I defiintely think some of the most influential FPS's in recent years w/ a much more open-ended style of gameplay are System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and STALKER.

Amen.
I'm sorry but HL was hardly revolutionary. It was a great game production-wise and story somewhat, but it didn't do anything new in the FPS category gameplaywise that hadn't been done in the 90's. Pretty graphics or "physics" do not make a game revolutionary. Sorry, Carnage.

HL is a great shooter, yes -- but hardly revolutionary.
Many could argue that HL1 is a lot like Doom, basically, in short...
Doom
---------
Located at scientific labs on Mars
Experiment goes wrong where a portal from Hell is opened
Monsters from Hell overrun the place.
HL1
---------
Located at scientific labs on Earth (Black Mesa)
Experiment goes wrong on some stuff
Mutated monsters overrun the place.

HL had that 'thing' that kept you glued to the screen from the beginning to very end. Witcher also is not a revolutionary. However it is similar to HL in a way. The story it tells is so entertaining, that you want to know what happens next, and next .... and next... and you keep playing for another 10 more minutes until the sun rises in the morning ;)

Bioshock and F.E.A.R. are miles better than HL2, in my opinion. Granted, I didn't get too far in HL- mainly because the gunfights consisted of "stand and shoot" rather than "Peek and cover" like in F.E.A.R.. I also love the story to Bioshock, and actually felt in that game- I haven't done that since Final Fantasy VII back in 1997. I honestly can't bring myself to harvest a Little Sister. That's what I want in my games.

Eh... Half-Life was pretty good... but hey... I detest Final Fantasy and that would get a lot of hardcore RPG fans up in arms. I think people can be justified if they put down Half-Life.
I thought it was a pretty decent game. I thought it had a marvelous story and was really unique in the way it got you involved in the game.

One thing was pretty revolutionary in Half-Life 1, though:
You never left your point of view, ever. Every cutscene was told from your point of view and you never lost control. That was a new thing back then. Just look at the intro of Half-Life 1. So, yes, basically the gameplay was standard FPS, although incredibly well done and polished, but they added a new way of storytelling to the repertoire of FPP games, which quickly was widely accepted in other games.

Haha, don't really see the connection between The Witcher and Crysis, but nice publicity stunt for Crysis I guess (not that it need any more than it already has).
As for all that shooter business:
Half Life was hardly revolutionary, but I did like it. As for of first-person storytelling: no that was not new in shooters either.
I played Call of Duty 4 and it's horrid. It's like "Doom 3 doesn't even look half bad in comparison" horrible, which is pretty damn horrible.
I'd certainly take Crysis over that tripe any day, it's demo was surprisingly good and certainly trashes CoD4 left, right and in every other direction (imo).
