And it was completely fine in The Witcher 1, I generally liked the idea too. Nevertheless i prefer the solution from TW2, where anyone can pick something that suits him. There's no problem with finishing the game with Draug Armor, for example, if you prefer it over the Vran armor. Same goes to DM armors.
Personal preferences aside, i never read about geralt having such haircut and never seen him with such haircut in any medium. I would rather see him in the official trailer with haircut that geralt would actually chose. ›››
You have to take into consideration the fact, that this is a game, not the books. The compromise is inevitable, because you're not reading about the character, you're playing the character. And there are various opinions about what's appealing and what is not ;>
