Interesting. He has good things to say.

I keep wondering how he classifies The Witcher with respect to his characterization of "choice and consequence". It is funny, though, that I also thought C&C was Command and Conquer until a few years ago, and I never talked about choice and consequence in games before. I suppose it was a core element of cRPG's, period. Now so called RPG's are supposed to be great because they feature traces of a core element of role-playing? Ridiculous.

I think so called C&C happens naturally in The Witcher as a result of character reactivity, which would place it in the honest category.

In any case, this is another excellent reason to be excited about Wasteland 2, Project Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numenera. With these resurrected game mechanics, they sure are revitalizing this decaying genre. And despite what some people think, regardless of their lack of uber-fantastic hexa-high-def mega-realistic graphics they ARE pushing the genre forward. Just look at all we've lost.

Yeah I'm a long time subscriber of that guy. Amazing dude. I really do wish he'd upload videos a bit more often. Or at the very least, keep to a consistent schedule. He really is just that good. You can't get enough of him (insert sex joke here).

But yeah, awesome vid. It's gonna be interesting to see what the next gen RPGs have in store for us. They have to start incorporating more of this whole C&C thing and make sure it actually means something. Shallow choices are pretty pointless. Might as well not have any.
Tearing my hair out, trying to figure out why there aren't any non-human Witchers, or at least something equivalent to a Witcher oriented warrior.

Thanks for posting this, MrBtongue is right on the money on every point. I don't understand how Type One games are not more numerous, they seem easier to "design" (in terms of decision trees) than their counterparts.

Most important point in the video: c&c should simulate real world in terms of logical or expected consequences.

I will say, however, that games should also not be afraid of chaos, i.e. it would be fun to let the player experience something unexpected despite all the "right" choices.

Also, it's unnecessary to bring up graphics every time we talk about old-school RPG attributes- they didn't have shitty graphics because it's some sort of virtue.

This is a stereotype that the industry should be encouraged to break, actually, that games with great graphics cannot have equally awesome gameplay or game depth.

So long story short, if you're making a game go the Obsidian/Black Isle or CDPR route when implementing real choice and consequence, rather than the crap that Bioware squeezes out.

Makes sense to me, but kind of obvious.
I was once asked by a journalist what my thoughts were on the modern world slipping into ignorance and apathy, I told him, "I don't know and I don't fucking care!"

I basically agree with him. Although I don't agree c&c for replayability is necessarily bad if it's done like it is in TW2.

He says replayability comes naturally from going down the road of simulation. Which is what the witcher series does very well.

Congratulations, now go watch ALL of Mr.B's videos AND read his article on "what is RPG"

One thing that astounds me was how you can get screwed for talking the wrong way or talking too much in early games,

how conversation now becomes an 'exhaust all possible dialogue tree" feature before moving on

I also can't wait when RPGs will even account of what you're wearing and how you look into account (mercenaries will not even bother with skinny looking "beggar" players and guards will react to you strolling into town with Devil Daedra armor)

On the other hand, the witcher 2 also kills you if you piss off Roche or Iorveth, I thought those were neat moments

But yeah.. i like it when games make me paranoid :thumbsup:/>

There are games already that take into account what you're wearing. In Arcanum for example you can overcome an early encounter without combat if you wear the right clothes and are persuasive enough.

This is not about Command and Conquer?

Good video though. Saw another one too, and for some WTF reason he went on to talk about the holocaust for half the Planescape video. I actually agree with his worry there about the line from Numenera. I have worries about that "What does one life matter?" line too, and hope it won't end up as them trying too much to copy PST. Hopefully a misfounded worry, but it's there.

Bethesda, if you’re gonna make another Fallout please try to make as much use of Type One as the original creators did.
