Hi,

Just got TW2, and really like it since it's such a change from normal games.

I downloaded a mod and unzipped it. It didn't offer to put it in its right place. I read the text file that came with it, and it said to copy the file in the "game directory."

I found two places where TW2 files are located. First, under Documents, and the second in Program Files (x86).

I presume the "game directory" is the second one?

Also, after unzipping the file, there was an XML document (and the accompanying text file). I copied the XML document into the "game directory," loaded the game but nothing happened.

Did I do something wrong?

Thanks for any help.

Note: First, there's the xxxx.zip file. When I double click that, I see a folder named AAAA. When I double click that, I see a file named BBBB.xml.

Under the Program Files (x86), under TW2, there's a folder named the same - AAAA - as in the zip file. So, that's where I copied the XML file.

It didn't overwrite any other files when I copied it.

I'm going to assume the mod in question had an installation guide?

Usually mods should go to the "CookedPC" folder. At least, every mod I have has ended up there. Usually it's enough to just drop it in CookedPC but sometimes you have to create a new folder depending on what mod it is in order to match the mod to the corresponding edited object or whatever.

For example, if you've downloaded a mod that alters your mutagens, you'll have to create an "abilities" subfolder within CookedPC. Hope that helps!

Oh and welcome to the forum :)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, the folder in the zipped file was the CookedPC folder, and that's why I copied the file into the same named folder in the TW2 Program Files (x386).

It makes whatever Geralt carries on him weightless.

The only installation guidance in the zipped mod said, "copy the file into your game directory," and nothing else.

Create a folder in the CookedPC folder and name it abilities . Then copy and paste the XML document into the abilities folder and you should be good to go .

If you still have problems after this, can you post the link for the mod itself?

I added the "Abilities" folder under the CookedPC folder and moved the XML file into it, but it still didn't work (I reboot my computer before reloading the game, just to make sure).

Below is the link to the mod:

http://witcher.nexusmods.com/mods/179

It's a small file, only 7 KB.

Thanks again for the help.

The path should be CookedPC/items/def_weights.xml. CookedPC should already have existed, and be in the game directory inside Program Files (x86). You may need to create the items sub-folder.

I also noticed that the mod was only confirmed OK up to game version 2.1. It *should* still be OK, but if you still have problems after correcting the folder, try this one:
http://witcher.nexusmods.com/mods/115/
(It's the one I use, and definitely still works).

Again, thanks for all the help.

Once I added the Items folder under CookedPC, it worked fine.

I deleted the Abilities folder I added yesterday, assuming it was no longer needed.

BTW, I want to say that it's nice to come to a forum where players help each other. I'm 65 and have been gaming for 31 years (starting with the C-64). I just stopped playing Blizzard's D3, and their forum is just a cesspool of hate, ranting, and raving.

Again, thanks, and have a nice weekend.

Blizzards forum are usually pretty full of very spiteful people sharing their hatred for all things concerning the universe, especially Blizzards games. It's rather odd since they all still buy and play Blizzards games and seem to be using the forum just to spread hate and discontent. Blizzard fans - logic always prevails with them.

Anyway! I'm happy everything worked out for you. Modding can be rather confusing and convoluted, even to me who's been doing this shit for quite some time! :S

Again, welcome to the forum and I hope you'll enjoy your stay here :) Just be mindful of the attic. I don't think we ever got rid of the "thing" that lives there.

Hush. We're not supposed to talk about that, it scares people away.

And, @SixSixSix, Glad it's working, and please stay around. Don't worry about the attic. There's nothing there. Honest.
