Well this brilliant tv show finally came to an end after a wonderful journey of 4 years. I admit I shed some man tears during the finale, and if you've seen it you will share the sentiment. What was in the beginning very much criticized is now one of the best creations out there, in terms of solid acting, story telling, visuals, emotions, heck everything. Now reading all reviews, interviews with the creator and all is making me go :crybaby: lol

Anyone here a fan of it? If you haven't seen it, time you do and if you're a fan let us share a toast in the name of the greatest warrior who lived.

Yes I also loved it. I be missing those dramatic slow-motion action runs and jumping! :)

Gannicus was my favorite, I was really hoping they will be captured again and taken to Rome to do some more gladiatoring :)

I was so sad at how Gannicus was sent off, but I can say that it was very well done, because I was mad, sad, and kinda happy for him at the same time... a true legend of a man!
Gannicus!!! Gannicus!!! Gannicus!!! Gannicus!!! Gannicus!!!

Most epic and touching scene, where in the end of the last episode (S03E10) after the credits Andy Whitfield shouts I AM SPARTACUS. You truly are and always will be Andy.

I watched all the series and I was thrilled to see Spartacus in action. A man with a mind of a tactician, a heart of a lion and a wisdom of many philosophers. As a Greek, I'm really happy, but sad that Spartacus will put to an end, when Spartacus dies later on.

I'm at the 8th episode of the new season of Spartacus, who was against the legendary Gaius Julius Caesar. Literally, I reached there, where Krixus dies with his wife under Crassus's son's hands.

I think Spartacus will die in the movies at the next season. We have yet to see more.

Only watched one of the episodes, seemed to be overdoing it a bit much with the whole sex and violence bit, did it get better? More importantly do we get to see the far more interesting aspects of Rome and the rise of the triumvirate at that time, Crassus, still probably one of the richest men who has ever lived on Earth. Magnus Pompeii, a low born soldier who fought his way to pre-eminence as Romes strong right hand. And of course Caesar, master of the mob and brilliant daring young politician.

One has to wonder whether Spartacus' long siege on the slopes of Vesuvius shaped that alliance at all, and what came after. Such as Caesar's policy upon his return from the Gallic wars to rid Rome of cheap slave labour, and thus make honest craftsmen and excellence a feature of Roman architecture and everyday life again, rather than slipshod slave work. Of course he only did so after selling off the millions of Gauls he had taken as slaves in the wars.

Edit: How are the battle scenes later on Vesuvius by the way, do we get to see maniples and the disciplined use of formations from both sides, or is it the usual Hollywood mano e mano stuff? How's the armour as well, do we have the authentic mail of the time, or do they use the far later adopted Lorica Segmentum? Might grab this if it's nicely detailed and historically acurate.

Just a tip, you should have put the "a toast in the name of the greatest warrior who lived." under a Spoiler. It kind of gives away that

I absolutely loved the part where

I think he kinda did when he said to Spartacus, if only you were born a roman, and were by my side. That was some sort of acknowledgment.

I've only seen a couple of scenes of Spartacus, never sat down to watch an entire episode. Seems decent enough. Not my cup of tea. Lucy Lawless is a hottie though.

WHAT!?

Uh... he's talking about someone who lived around 100 BC, so yeah, he's dead. And, history says he dies in a battle, so.. not really a spoiler.

Started out as kind of a guilty pleasure for me, the first season was really mostly just blood and boobs, but it kept getting better, and the third season was some really smart TV amid all the gratuitous sex and violence. I guess it's a shame they had to end it sooner than they wanted, but at least the show went out when it was at its best.

It does have some historical accuracy, quite a bit in fact, but don't expect what hasn't ever been done before in a Holywood production.

Yes they do have a lot of Lorica Segmentata but also the Lorica Hamata for some soldiers.

As for formations, they don't really focus a huge amount on that but they don't ignore it either. He's a scene of the final battle.

I want to get into this series, but for some reason...I don't.

I don't know, I think 3 Kingdoms spoiled me when it comes to historical drama.
In any case, I am not encouraged to start it just yet, but we'll see. For now, I'll read instead.

Wouldn't the Romans just block Spartacus' cavalry with their superior Nubian or Spanish light cavalry, which would be out on either flank?

I've got to say though that that screenshot is enormously cheering, it's nice to see historical epics not spitting on their subject matter, think i'll pick up a few seasons on Blu Ray for a rainy day, thank you Costin.

Edit: Plus Foggy's dead right, Lucy Lawless, thighs I wouldn't mind dying between.

Gannicus was my most favourite too. Actually historically

Well yeah, most people knew how the end would be, it was just dam executed dam brilliantly. They tried to be as faithful as the real events. You should watch the discussions with DeKnight, lot of insight. And this wasn't just any stupid hollywood production, I remember ppl just dismissing it as gore fun and soft porn. But now (after few episodes from s1) this is one of the most bold and brilliant shows crafted.

I personally can't wait for more, as they are in talks for creating a new series on Julius Caesar, Marcus Crassus (and Pompey of course)

I might be lying if I didn't shed a man tear or two. If you haven't seen it, now is a time you must!

It's interesting that Rome seems almost to have thrived and been re-invigorated by near defeat, in a lot of ways Spartacus and Hannibals campaigns bore some passing similarities, and made the Republic all the stronger in a lot of ways.

Got to admit I was a bit put off by the boobs and blood of the episode I saw, but considering all of your good opinions i'm definitely sold.

Bloth: The tactics, formations and strategy are really only prevalent in the final season. The prequel one is before Spartacus is turned into a slave, the first season is about his life as a gladiator, the second about the aftermath of his escape leading the Glaber's death and the third is about the war proper.

I'd say the third season is the best of the lot, but the rest are great as well. I still miss Ashur and Batiatus.

With regards to your points about Roman auxilia, there are barely any shown. Most troops the Romans use are either militia or hastily recruited men and mercenaries from Italy. Crassus only really has italian troops himself, which makes sense considering he did raise his legions from his own coin in Italy in haste.

I have only seen the first season and i think it was great.. yeah, the first episodes seemed like a copy of the movie 300 when it comes to action scenes and violence, but i still love them..
i will forever love the portrayal of Spartacus by Andy Whitfield - he did a great job with the character.. great actors overall, great pacing, dialogues and atmosphere.. the final episode of the first season was the best episode and one of the best TV work that i have ever seen and it was really touching..
i plan to see the second and the final season of the show - i have heard that they are even better than the first one
