Don't think I've even heard of Oddworld, but if you recommend them they gotta be good
I first played Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee when I was 14, but never cared to finish it. It has been a game I was always fond of however. Recently there was a sale on GOG and bought the first 2 (there are more on Steam) and they were truly awesome!
Did you ever play PC classics like Prince of Persia (1989) or Another World? These are side scrolling platformers where you also have to solve mechanical puzzles and fight. This is the kind of game we're talking about. Except Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus have awesome animated CGI instead of the also awesome illustrated storybook transitions of Prince of Persia II.
Essentially, Abe is a creature of a race called Mudokons, once proud shamanistic humanoids that inhabited the forests of Oddworld. But ever since the Magog Cartel, an industrial/criminal organization of Glukkons rose to power (after their rejection of their own traditions), they started building corporations and enslaving the free races of Oddworld. They use Mudokons as slave laborers to power and maintain multiple facilities, including a meat processing plant and a brewery. In the first game, Abe (a Rupture Farms --meat processing plant-- slave) accidentally becomes aware of their evil plans and tries to escape, meets wild Mudokons who help him regain some of his shamanistic ancestry, and returns to save as many Mudokons as he can. In the second game, an apparition requests that he also save the Mudokons enslaved in the mines and brewery.
It's loaded with dark humour, some over the top violence, lots of difficult platforming, puzzle solving and corporate destabilization
