Nah I grew up playing Senat, bit before comps.
I was once asked by a journalist what my thoughts were on the modern world slipping into ignorance and apathy, I told him, "I don't know and I don't fucking care!"

It's bloody true that games have been given a free pass for the benefit of increased graphical fidelity, they've stripped content and features year after year in a draconian fashion, and yet we've thanked them for making the pictures a little prettier.

Progress, no regression for the sake of 3d. CDPR are one of the few developers showing ambition. ›››

You are right on both accounts.

I am a fan of clean and easy interfaces, and I say it's possible to have good content and nice visuals if both aspects are handled in a thoughtful manner.

But otherwise, yeah, games do sacrifice a lot for the sake of graphics, which I don't appreciate either.

I'd like a journal that looks like it was crafted from the time period, with pen and ink or woodcut style illustrations. And if anything, I want more elaborate descriptions of places, events and weapons. I thought the TP style through Dandelion was a great idea so I hope they continue with that.

Pardon my ignorance. Who's he?

I should have prefaced that question with the following disclaimer:
I have occasionally browsed the music thread on the community forum but was amazed that not once in thirty pages or so did I managed to find a fellow forumer endorsing my musical tastes. All I could gather is that black metal seems to be quite popular amongst Witcher fans.

A genre about which I plead total ignorance.

RPG this is not a video game, designed for speed of reaction and action. It's an adventure, explore the world and dive into it. And for all of this text is a must. for the video game of the text will only be a burden. RPG video game while reducing the amount of text in it greatly loses its charm.
whatever the graphics in the game, should be a place the imagination. without text it will just be running and waving a sword. the game is very strong literary basis - it would be foolish not to use it extensively. drop text from an RPG is like blunt weapons before a fight.

graphics in the game are still no substitute for the detailed text. film can not still fully replace the book. so that the text is still a strong expressive tool for game.
I do not like to read? rveshsya rather swing the sword? then quickly flipping through the book. If the game is a lot of text that you do not lose it. but if the text is small, many other people will lose

Lords of Midnight?

I still wonder how the hell did they manage to pull that game on a 48K computer. 48K! Nowadays file headers are bigger than that. ›››

The favourite game of my childhood ! Even more than Elite. Superb game.

You are aware of the online multiplayer version?

Midnight / MU

OT: I believe text still has, and will always have, a valid place in computer games. For the simple reason that they try to emulate reality, and aren't we surrounded by text ? Arguably most peoples life experience is a primarily visual medium, can you imagine it with no text ?

That's not what I'm raising my voice against. I'm raising my voice against what I perceived to be a tentative and reactionary attempt to artificially bring back text as the primary medium of exposition in videogames. And that not because I don't value text and its unique qualities in realm of language, but simply because text is not the intrinsic medium of video games.

Text is a necessity in an RPG. There are entirely too many events, monsters, and unique items for people to be able to memorize all of that information after a conversation with a priest of Oghma. However, most people do not want to be bombarded by a text wall every few steps. Being able to by books from the local merchants and finding a few scattered about here and there is a good way of presenting information that can then be stored in your Journal, so that you can go back and refer to that information. If a player does not want to be bothered with reading about any of the lore then he doesn't need to buy any books from the merchants. For myself, I do like having text in a game, limited text in the inventory, just enough to know the stats of a piece of armour or the sword I am carrying. A much more extensive version of the text in the Journal. For example you can find/buy a book about a monster that tells you need to cut off the poisonous tail, use the strong style, and consuming a mongoose potion is the best tactic. In journal you can have a much more extensive description that also gives you brief narrative about the creature. This way people who dislike reading get the basics, and those of us you like a more immersive environment can refer to the Journal.

I would love to see more detailed text in your journal personally. Someone suggested Dandelion reading it. I'd be on board with that. I liked his narrative/[Geralt's] journal in W2. Especially on how he does not describe Geralt as being a hero and even down talking him in a way(like a real person would, I suppose).

But then again it could be fandom, I always wanted to know more and more in my journals for TW even on petty shit. Yet in say dishonored I always felt bombarded by text, but it could of been my gradually not liking the game itself. Even in Skyrim I read a lot, granted I always liked the lore.
