Buying TW2: Steam or GOG?
17.02.2013 @ 15:53 #1
Hello!
So recently I decided to buy TW2 for PC, so I can experience the REDkit when it is finally here! The question is, on which system should I buy it on: Steam or Gog?
I at first considered GOG, with all the things you get with it and whatnot, but then again Steam has have a lot of exclusive stuffs with the game, contests and awards and such. So I am in a dilemma, and would like to ask you people what is the better option.
Thanks!

Let's see. GOG is DRM-free, gives you a ton of extras, and you support a company that believes in DRM-free gaming which happens to be a sister company of CD Projekt. Steam requires you to be online at least to download and activate your game, you have limitations on how you can manage your software, it doesn't give you many extras and it is not related to CD Projekt in any way. I'd say, that's a REALLY easy choice. Glad you went with GOG.

PC does not equal Windows. Personal computers run many different operating systems, like GNU/Linux and, why not, Windows. PC games should be available for all major platforms. Let's not be handcuffed and tied to one vendor. Utilize standard, cross-platform technologies!

Yes. And with the GOG version, why would anyone need a Steam version too? You can install your GOG.com TW2 on all your computers. Another plus point for GOG.

That is exactly the same thing Steam fanboys say when they complain about a game not being on Steam.
I'm just saying you get more for your money with the Steam version. I redeemed it on gog and let a friend basically play the whole game. Now he owns Witcher 1 and 2 on Steam and eagerly awaiting Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk.

Maybe for you because you live in US. Most of my games are blocked when I travel to different countries because they are locked to region EU2. It's funny because Steam prices in EU2 are the same as in EU1. T__T
It's even funnier that I have to pay more than US customers.

my economy today is not good enough to pay my good recent game. So my contribution to GOG is limited to small purchases of $ 5.99 or $ 9.99 per month. And so far I do not regret the games that I have bought them
/> I want to help CDPR maintain their prices and quality stuff as usual.

A large proportion of the people who ask for help getting their game to work are from Steam. If they can't get their game to work any other way, we recommend that they use their product key to redeem and download the GOG version ... and then their game usually works fine. I don't know if that means that the Steam version is less stable than the GOG version, but if you don't have a strong reason to use Steam, GOG is certainly a better bet.
Want to be IN a computer game? I'm making one, and I want a picture of you! See here for details.
I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.
I've also made a bunch of mods that fix bugs, kill annoyances or tweak gameplay; you can get those at the Witcher Nexus.

Buy The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition via GOG . CDPR owns GOG , they deserve our money and enhanced edition is available there in 15gb file size which will install the game of 22.5GB . You won't have any problems .
If you have any problem while launching the game . ›››

Definitely GOG - they have a DRM free principle, unlike Steam. Plus you'll be using the channel of CDPR themselves (they own GOG). In general - avoid any DRM, whether it relates to games, books, video or what not. By supporting DRM free distributors you vote with your wallet, and show that you don't support those who push insulting preemptive policing technologies on their users.
When it comes to games, DRM free means:
1. You can save the installer and use it whenever and wherever you need to install the game without a need to be connected to any server while installing.
2. You can run the game at any time without running any side "clients" and etc.
3. You can run the game at any time without need to be connected to any DRM server.
With Steam however:
1. They require you to connect to their server to install the game. So in case they terminate your account - you'll loose all ability to install any game which you bought from them. As others pointed out, it can restrict your regional options as well.
2. For many games they require you to run the Steam client in order to play the game itself.
3. For some games they require you to be connected to a DRM server to play them.
