Constant hard crashes

I have the version from GOG, and I'm really enjoying it... when I can play.

I have been getting constant hard crashes. It doesn't CTD, but it locks up the computer entirely, forcing me to hard reset the computer, and it is happening quite frequently.

It's starting to get really irritating.

I've tried all different compatibility modes. Running the exe directly. The IncreaseUserVa switch. Running in windowed mode. Disabling autosave and deleting saves. Is there something I'm missing so far?

I'm using an AMD FX-4100 processor, with 8GBs RAM and an nVidia GeForce 9800GT graphics card. Running Windows 8 Pro x64.

HELP!

A total freeze would usually imply something outside the game itself. Have you tried reinstalling your graphics drivers?

I'll give that a shot and see how it goes. Thanks.

Reinstalling graphics drivers didn't make a difference either.

Installed it on an old Windows 7 install and it started crashing to the desktop instead of hard crashing... So, not sure what the disconnect is. Could be that the Windows 7 install is a 32-bit installation.

Did you install and are running the game as administrator ? Also look in your witcher/system folder for an ERR/LOG TXT file and attach if one exists .

Yes.

One didn't exist for the Windows 8 installation, but one did for the Windows 7 one. Attached. Less than ideal, because the Windows 8 one is my main concern, but fingers crossed nonetheless that this can get figured out somehow....

No. Pretty sure that 3D driver comes with the Nvidia drivers.

They do . But they generally aren`t running until they are user activated . Maybe try reinstalling your video drivers . This time though when the nvidia screen opens click "custom" and uncheck anything related to 3D drivers .

Done. Didn't really change anything. Crashed after 2 minutes in Windows 8 Pro x64. Windows 7 x86 did slightly better than that, crashing after 14 minutes.

I`m seeing quite a few windows error reports in your dxdiag but most are blank or at best have LiveKernelEvent as the event name . Might try looking in your windows logs to verify that this is a problem .

You might try MSI Afterburner and run the MSI Kombustor stress test to ensure your card is ok .

Well, tried the stress test and everything and that all seems to be fine.

Looking through the Windows logs, I see a few errors related to djinni.exe and also library calls. So, looking into that I uninstalled and reinstalled all the Visual C++ redistributables, and was just able to play for a bit, but after another crash, I couldn't find any log related to it. Just that the system shutdown unexpectedly.

The game or your computer system shut down . If the computer shutdown then there is a problem that needs to be addressed . Maybe look in the windows logs under system for unexpected shutdown .

Oh! No, no... It's saying that because I did that, rebooting when it crashes.
