Only part of AC 3 that I liked were beginning chapters with Haytham. Then it just went completely downhill, gameplay and story-wise. I had to force myself to finish it.
To summarize the series
AC 1 - easily my favourite, definitely in my top 10 of this generation
AC 2 - huge downgrade in story and overall design department, but it was fun at the time.
ACB - I dont remember antything from it. Except Collosseum. This is where I lost a lot of interest in series.
ACR - as a little expansion, it was nice. Great ending.
AC 3 - WHERE IS CHARLES LEE. I really did not like this one. Setting was meh, story dragged on and I just wanted to play as Haytham the whole time. Embarassing ending.
I cant say I care about more games in series.

AC3 is my favorite, including story wise, except for a rushed endgame.

Huh, I’m interested in two things:
1) How are they gonna continue the present time story? By going forward? Or backward? Or going with a parallel time line?
2) Will it feature either one of my favored settings *-* ? I’d love to see an Assassin’s Creed game set in Edo period Japan or Thirty Years’ War Germany.

I hope they listen to people who say they only liked Haythan's part.
And that the interesting parts of the story are just in the minor conversations. ›››

Yeah, I enjoyed playing as Haytham way more than playing as Connor. At least Haytham had personality and interesting dialogue. Connor was way too naïve and kinda one dimensional. I'd love to play a full game from Templar view.

AC3 was a very fantastic game, arguably the best in the series, the only real problem one the story was very inconsistent. Not bad, let me tell again, inconsistent. The entire fault is not of the writers, as they wanted to be as close to history as possible, but still it does feel kind of rushed despite they say this game was in the works for 3 years with 6 studios from around the world.
But yet the story was good. The very fact many who said Haythem was interesting that Conner proves they have very interesting tales to say. I would love to have Conner back for another games as he is still in his 30s, and previously we saw stories of Altair and Ezio till their death as old men.
I so want that feudal japan game to happen, samurai

But the Maya civilization is not South American. It is Meso-American, i.e. southern North America and Northern Central America, including Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador. In South America a very widely known indigenous civilization would be the Incas. ›››
Ah yes, right you are. Not the first time I confuse their location.

THAT is just poor story-telling. ›››
I wouldn't call the Templar / Assassins conflict poor story telling. As KoP said, it is a genre in itself, and since the whole AC games centers around the conflict, it's obvious they should be the primary focus.
But with that said, the main focus is not really the ideological divide in the AC franchise (especially not after AC1). In AC1, all the Templars you assassinate represent something, everything from from lust to power to a desire for an established order. Heck, even Altair's codices had a philosophical reflections in AC2. But still, the main focus in the games is primarily the characters, how they grow and develop throughout the game(s).
While the Assassin / Templar conflict is binary, it is being fought over several ideas and issues, both philosophical and practical. Essentially the both start with the same premise: "Nothing is True. Everything is permitted". While similar, they still have a very different view of the world and how it ought to be.

The ideological divide becomes prominent again with Revelations and especially AC3, which imo had the most compelling Templars. And so brilliantly teased at an alliance between Assassins and Templars.
AC3 pushed the limit of storytelling in the series, it had the best story. And it rekindled faith in the series to continue on that path.

What does that have to do with AC?
But yes everyone should play Legacy of Kain games, they are fantastic.

Just finished AC3 a few days ago, and so much agree with this statement! Shame to hear Connor isn't continuing in the next installment, really grew to love him (I admit I cried a lot in the game).
Oh well, maybe next game?
