I disagree with the premise. I've yet to play an open world RPG that has a good story. I've played through Morrowmind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Dragon Age. Did I enjoy those games? Yes... did I like them NEARLY as much as Witcher 2? Goodness no!
Open world usually means the story takes a back seat. Can that be changed? Guess we'll have to wait and see if CDPR can do this when other developers have failed. I don't want miles of copy-pasted wilderness and random useless filler dungeons. TW2 was a perfect game to me... the ONLY RPG I've ever replayed because I couldn't get enough and I've played it 7 times now.
Will I be replaying TW3? I have my doubts but only time will tell. Overall, I am highly disappointed with the change to open-world because I believe the story aspect will take a hit. Oh well.

God I hate open world games why?
An example in a funny way:
If The witcher 2 was open world(SPOILERS)
Ioreveth path,Vergen,It is intense,Saskia is poisoned, they don't know how to solve the curse to get on the other side,They will almost ceirtanly be killed by Henselt and their army,an immersive setting.Geralt is about to do something.
NOPE
Let's go to flotsam and do some side missions, maybe jion the fight club!It just about time to go explore and do pointless side quests everywhere,we can also hop up to Loc Muine and kill some gargoyels!
Who gives a fuck about Saskia being poisoned, curse, anything, let's give the players and option to go wherever they want,we don't care if it breaks immersion, dissconects you from the story and from the setting,we will do it anyway becouse every other RPG is doing it!.
I just really hope they are the first RPG makers who make an open world game that doesn't match the description I gave you, becouse almost every other open world RPG does that! ›››

Well, being an open world game doesn't immediately equate to a good game, but neither does it mean that the story will be terrible.
How the story turns out will be dependent upon the writers, and how the gameplay turns out will be dependent upon how well the team as a whole can combine both elements in an open-world context. However, given that Witcher 2 was my GOTY and personally one of my favorite games ever, I will give CDPR the benefit of the doubt.
Not to mention the fact that games HAVE successfully pulled off open-world with great story and gameplay, e.g., Assassin's Creed II, Red Dead Redemption.

I really love open world games. I'm a person who like to do every side quest and look what's on the other side of that hill. Skyrim was the game i really love to play. But there was a big problem at least for me in that game. After playing like 30 hours in that game i allready got best armor and max level and i planed to play for next 60 hours on the same save! So the problem was that my character really didn't progress at all after those 30 hours, that made me sad. It kinda make me loose my power to play to the end. Of course some mods made by players upgraded playstyle a little but still it didn't destroy my bad taste i got after finding about i can't get anything better. I hope some CD Project Red people read those forums and understand problems that players face when playing diffrent games. The challenge of making open world game a very successful game in terms of gameplay and story is very hard but i think everyone belive that CPR will make that happen. And i got a question at the end. What place on the world map of Witcher action will take place? Is it in Nilfgaard? Was there allready announcement about it? Because i don't remember reading about that. Sorry for my english, was never good at writing

your english is fine
main areas will be skellige (the islands to the west), novigrad (above oxenfurt) and "no man's land" (where that is is everyone's guess unless I missed sth)

If they keep choices and consequences, and focus on details and combine it with the open world feel then it will beat its competitors.
Im really looking forward to details, for example if Gerald finished a contract to clean a mine form monsters, and then comes back after some time the mine should be wroking again with miners digging for ore and all of the lamps in the mine should be lit up again. Or if he helps the Nordlings to retakes a village which was under Nilfgaardian control then all guards get replaced by Nordlings guards and collaborationist get executed. ect.
One thing I really thing TW2 lacked was different converstions between NPC's, most of them used the same line over and over again so walking pass 2 Npc's in Vergen which use the same line for the 10th time was kinda annoying. I would be nice to hear them to talk about recent events like "The Nilfgaardians are besieging X or Y city".

Hi Everyone ,before giving opinion i would like to clear two thing .
1)- I am not huge fan of open world games , so no fanboy
2)- Since The Witcher 3 as open world title coming from CD Projekt Red , I am not worried and have faith in CDPR and The Witcher 3 .
So after clearing up the first point above I still think that The Witcher 3 should be open world game . Why.? Here is the reason :
When The Witcher 2 was out in 2011 it became benchmark for RPGs and PC Graphics/Performance . We had games like Dragon Age 2 , Skyrim and Dark Souls , all RPGs . None of them achieved what The Witcher 2 had . There were some reviewers who even said that other games in front of red engine technology and The Witcher 2 which is using that graphics engine , looks like a joke .
After mix reviews of Dragon Age 2 , Bioware went back to paper and announced that Dragon Age 3 will use Frostbite 2 engine which is good looking one and it will be open world game as well , on other hand dark souls 2 developers aiming for better looking game this time around instead of Dark Souls which looked like Playstation 2 game .
The Witcher 3 , Dragon Age 3 and Dark Souls 2 all major Role Playing Games are coming in 2014 , in same year almost just like the last time , same competition . I as a huge fan of The Witcher series want The Witcher 3 to totally shock everyone with it's production values . I want it to not only become best looking RPG but best looking open world game with best story and gameplay and best choice and consequence system so it not only becomes one of the best games ever made like first two games in the series but also become RPG of the year and strong contender for GOTY .
It will be nice if you will post your opinions here . So guys what you think . Do you want open world game if story is not compromised (which I think won't be) .? Please Leave Comment . ›››

Great topic.
I myself like the premise of open world games. But like everyone else don't want to see story suffer. It they can pull it off, brilliant, they will have conquered Everest. This is something that's so hard to determine beforehand. Unlike other IPs, only when we have played the game will we know they have succeeded.
I'll say this though: They're mighty brave for trying.
