Since so many people on these forums are speculating about an Open World in The Witcher 3, so many people that want an Open World in The Witcher 3 and so many people against it. I thought: Let's make a poll and see how many people would like an open world, and how many in fact, don't. :)/>/>

I myself would not want an open world in The Witcher 3, I think the way the world is in The Witcher 2 is good. Perhaps CDPR could open up the roads between places where Geralt goes, though only if this is an addition to the story. I don't think they should force things like an open world to the game if this involves (which most open worlds have) bugs or have the story suffer for it.

Now I would like to hear your opinions! Are you excited for an open world The Witcher 3?
If it's not too much to ask please motivate your answers! :D/>

Well I am not against it if they focus on the story ...........But I am against an ES thing........The thing is if they keep the story as good as the first 2 they can do anything they like.

The problem with open world games I have is:

  • that the outside world is too empty, dead which makes it boring
  • there is anything worth exploring
  • the quest's are too generic and boring (bring me x of this, go to x and kill the monster, ...)
  • (My main problem) in games like two worlds, elder scroll games. Why am I the only one traveling outside the world (road, forest, mountain, etc. I want to see somebody) and getting attacked by enemies or monsters? There should be some npc getting attacked or go hunting too, the monsters should sometimes attack each other too.
  • the main story is weak or not even existent.

the only open world game I liked so far and got me existent was skyrim, but that was because of the world which was more alive than other open world focused games.

So if CDP Red can solve these problem, than they can surely go for an open world game.
It's not really a problem, they only have to look at the open world aspects on the two witcher games, make it quite bigger in TW3 and make sure you can travel to each location, city, village whenever you want without going to a map and select your destiny.

Also by the meaning of open world, it doesn't mean it have to be big, but just large enough to go from one place to another without borders (loading screens) or selecting the destiny on a map or sth. Every place (or most of it) on the world map should be accessible by going on foot.

I don't think we should expect something like Skyrim and i don't want that anyway, i want a story driven game and not an exploration modus.

In my opinion Witcher 1 was already kinda open world, but with a focus on Vizima. They should extend this system by more towns and outskirts.

I love open world games. I think Witcher 3 would get a huge improvement from being open world.

If it's a consequence less hiking simulator like Skyrim, then i'd despise it and cry like an extremely large baby. If it's an in-depth arena of choice, consequence and immersive detail, like say Ultima 4-7, then i'd dance a jig and giggle inanely.

I don't care either way. I think CDPR will do a great job with both open world or hub worlds. I just hope CDPR isn't just looking at Elder Scrolls there is also Fallout 1,2 and New Vegas and the Gothic series as well. While I'm no lover of Kingdoms of Amalur it had a nice varied world to it and Dragon's Dogma also. An open world setting can really help with adding dungeons and such that make finding rare weapons something special imagine a Last Crusade-esque dungeon for Raven's Armor or any sword?

More quests could be interconnected and have multiple ways to be completed like in New Vegas. Who doesn't love how many ways "Beyond the Beef" could be completed? We could see roaming parties of the Northern Kingdoms and Nilfgaard meeting each other out in the open the same way Caesar's Legion and the NCR would. We could really feel like Witchers by going from town to town grabbing quests to kill monsters for a mere pittance though I doubt it since people don't want fetch quests or go to X and kill Y quests either.

I think open world offers alot of freedom. I think Witcher 3 will be open world though and not a full fledge sandbox think Legend of Zelda and not Elder Scrolls. Either way I wouldn't mind.

I'm hoping for something that is open-map, like DA:O. Lets say we can visit any region or territory through fast travel via the game map, and then have large hub areas to represent each. To do it Skyrim style makes no sense to me. No matter what they do, I hope they don't abandon the chapter based structure.

Open worlds like Arkham Asylum/City are okay but when it explodes into something like Skyrim it becomes rather discouraging and I prefer quality over quantity. So no.
Hope. The cruellest poison.

No. Nothing is free, and having an open world will cost something else that I value more greatly, such as a very polished and focused story.

I think cdpr can deliver open world game, but i strongly suggest them to look at games like risen 1 and gothic 2 instead of skyrim. What's the difference? Skyrim is huge, the world is just too big and there is simply not enough content to cover such huge world, gothic 2 and risen1 has smaller worlds but more intense than skyrim, risen - 1 city, bandit camp and monastery, gothic 2- 1 city, farms, monastery, mining valley, in expansion pirate camp, water mage camp and bandit camp. Fractions in these games i mean camps and cities are really fleshed out with unique ncs, architecture and quests, it's easy to implement story there. In skyrim you have feel that everything is copy pasted, most small village looks the same, has very similar quests, are not fleshed out and it's hard to implement story there. I would like to see witcher 3 world that is as big or little bigger than witcher 2, i mean chapter1+2+3 combined. For example fleshed out city like vergen or vizima, outskirts, maybe something like Henselt's war camp, some dungenons that feel unique, forest or two.
TL;DR
I want fleshed out, polished world that isn't huge. Quality over quantity.

Mafia is open world and it has the best story of any game that happens in an open world city that i've ever played, often being quite superior to the story of many non open world games.

An open world doesn't mean the story will be any worse than if it wasnt open world, because open world refers to the space available in general, but not to how its presented or administrated.

TW3 having an open world is one feature, but what will affect the story, is how this world is explored according to it.

For me the best way to make an open world Witcher game would be like in Assassins creed 2, or making more cities/locations than that but smaller.

Elder scrolls is a big no because elder scrolls has something else than an open world, and thats sandbox gameplay, you can explore the last city presented in the story in the first 10 minutes if you happen to find it, because you are completely free to go where you want when you want it.

TW3 for me should have all the space that an open world game has, but it has to be organized properly according to the main plot and its main locations administrated gradually.

In case it happens in only one or two huge locations, then maybe the different city parts should be gradually presented, somewhat like Vizima in TW1 but with a different scale of course.

While playing TW2 I often missed the spaciousness of TW1, so I'm open to the concept.
"The dwarves of yore made mighty spells, while hammers fell like ringing bells,
In places deep where dark things sleep, in hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord, there many a gleaming golden hoard,
They shaped and wrought and light they caught, to hide in gems on hilt of sword."

I agree that open-world and sandbox are different things. I am all for some more spacious locations allowing access to more places but I'm against sandbox approach to Witcher games (and CP2077 too).

I wouldn't mind if they handled the environment just like in TW2. Big enough locations with borders. What I'd like to be added is a small village here and there.

I have ...
...We have other options for open worlds.
Let TW3 be another story driven game and close the trilogy gloriously.
Is that a word?
gloriously?
I don't care. You know what I mean.
When you make an true open word game, story telling suffers.
CDProjec has cyberpunk for open worlds. It fits great for open worlds. You can be yourself!

I TW games you are Geralt. Your version of Geralt, but geralt at last.

Open world is great if done properly.

Are you going to take inspiration from games that offer proper world design, like Ultima or Gothic/Risen? great.
Are you going to put a boring large landscape for the sake of it, like in the TES saga? Fuck that.
That said, while i never liked a single Bethesda game so far, they are at least trying.

A linear, "cinematic", "heavily story driven" RPG, on the other hand, has already lost this challenge before even starting.
While story and variety matters a lot to make a RPG good, these things should be served as contextualized into an immersive world that offers some degree of freedom.

It's baffling how people believe to this false dichotomy of "Open world OR good story content" as if they were mutually exclusive, when a 20 years old game like Ultima VII is at the same time one of the most open and interactive worlds ever seen in a RPG and a game with a stunning amount of unique characters and dialogue options.
And I could say the same for Fallout 2, for instance. Or Gothic 2 plus Night of the Raven.
