I recently installed The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition on my pc but keep getting random fps drops and major stuttering, I've tried changing almost every setting in the config menu and in the nvidia override, lowering my resolution, and upgrading my graphics driver but nothing seems to work. My computer should be able to handle the game on Ultra Settings, or at least I think it would but so far I can hardly play on the lowest settings.
My System Specs:

Alienware m18x r2
2 Nvidia gtx 680s in sli
Quad Intel i7 3920xm 3.10ghz
8gb ram
Resolution at 1920x1080

Oh, I've only played through the first part of the prologue as I havent been able to get much farther with the lag I've been having, I'm not sure if that makes a difference but I thought I'd say it just in case it's only present during the beginning of the game. I'm also updated to the latest patch. I'm sorry if this has already been discussed before but I couldn't find anyone with a similar setup that had the same problem or their solutions didn't work for me. I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer me as I would really like to play the game :)/>

Have you tried the stutter fix? You put it in your Witcher 2/bin folder and most of the time it fixes the stuttering completely. I don't know enough about FPS drops to speak to that, but you might try that fix if you haven't already and see where you're at.
I'm not here anymore, but there are still three ways to find me. First, you can go into a room with all the lights off and say my number three times while looking into a mirror. A bit macabre, admittedly. The second way would be to post a craigslist ad for anonymous sex, but don't be writing checks you can't cash, sweet stuff. Ahem. The third and most tasteful method would be to just check out my site where I review stuff because I'm a hyper-judgmental human being.

I was hoping that would be the fix but no luck, thankyou anyway
A weird thing I noticed though when running the game on task manager my cpu usage is only at 1-3%, is that normal? I know alot of games now rely heavily on graphics cards but I imagine it'd use up more than that. My gpus usage are anywhere from 40% to both being at 99%.

This is weird indeed, with this setup you should be able to run the game on Ultra - perhaps for the sake of FPS gain without ubersampling (depends what you prefer, the FPS should be above 30 anyway). Have you thought about checking if your graphics cards are not overheating? Maybe they are positioned too close to each other? Maybe try disabling SLI and see what happens.

No difference when enabling vsync?

I thought it might be an overheating problem, I checked the gpu temperatures in game and they're usually around 70-90 with one being slightly higher than the other. And yes I've tried enabling/disabling vsync in the witcher config and the nvidia control panel but unfortunately no change. I'll try disabling SlI and see what happens

if you have the 310.90 video drivers roll back to 310.70 and see what happens if not which ones do you have?

<div>310.90 had sli issue but were updated a few days ago to fix the issue.</div><div>Edit:I see you have the 680m in sli which are much weaker than a standard card but still you should be able to run this game fine with both.</div>

Have you checked for updates though Dell/Alienware? I`ve seen a few Alienware`s that were having trouble with the game but after checking and applying some updates their problem was resolved. .

Two 680s in sli are supposed to have a slightly higher preformance than a single 690. Apart from two 690s in sli I don't think you can get any higher in nvidia's cards, unless I'm wrong. Even so like you said I should at least be able to run it on low.
I'm on the 310.90 driver, the latest one. I tried a couple of previous drivers but it didn't make a difference. Also I just checked for alienware/dell updates I found a graphics update that i installed but it doesn't seem to have done anything :no

Is the GPU for the Witcher 2 profile set specifically to the NVidia ones in the NVidia Control Panel?

Yes, I have it set to use both of them
I'm really not sure what it is, like I said my cpu usage percent is literally at 0 when running the game but I'm not sure if that's normal or not. Perhaps it's a hardware issue with my computer, I did a few checkup scans and everything was normal, hmmm

When you look at the task manager, maybe Witcher 2's window should be in focus, many games doesn't render anything when they loose focus, and maybe that's why the CPU-usage is so low?
Running it in windowed mode and monitoring the task manager without focusing on it should do the trick :)

Thanks vinterberg! Going in windowed mode then looking at it worked, though my cpu usage is still really low (around 10%)
Other games have been running perfect though none of them are as demanding as The Witcher 2.
I have been able to get it a little better by setting the pre-rendered frames to 1 in the nvidia control panel. I'm able to somewhat run it on low, still getting thse fps drops though. It may be a setting somewhere on my computer that's not allowing the game to use all processing power of my computer...or maybe my computers not as great as I thought it was. I like to hope it's the former ::)/>

You have a laptop correct? if so then you have 2 680m the m standing for mobile which is a weaker version of the normal desk top card. Still 2 680m in SLI should handle this game no problem. I took the time to learn about the 680m specs and I must say impressive for a Mobile card. about the same as a last gen 580 desk top card. You sir have a very strong portable gaming rig. Sweet!!!

Haha considering the size I'm surprised it can't fit an entire desktop motherboard in it. I probably would have been better off buying a desktop or building one myself but then I figured I'd have to buy a laptop anyway so just went ahead with it, not that I regret it, it's served me pretty well until now, and even then I think it's something I'm doing wrong. Anyway, Thankyou :)

I finally got it working! For the most part at least. I'm running on fps mostly between 70-110 occasionaly dropping to the 20s and rising to around 150. I have all the settings on the ultra preset apart from cinematic depth of field, ubersampling, and I have vertical sync off. I'm not sure how it happened but in the Alienware control panel I was set on power management mode which causes my computer to limit cpu use. My FPS aren't stable but the game is playable with great graphics

I also attributed the fps drops to overheating. My fans were hardly kicking in until my temperature got be 80. I was able to fix it by following this guide http://forum.techinf...an-control.html (it's for alienware laptops but it may work for others as well) to adjust my fan speeds and now i'm getting a much more steady fps around 90-100, thankyou guys for your help :)/>
