So, My computers specs are
Windows 7
16gb ram
I5 3570k @ 3.4ghz
Radeon HD 7870
Resolution is 1920x1200

I read a review online that says with a Radeon HD 5870, 6gb of ram and an I7-920 OC to 3.7ghz they run The Witcher 2 at ultra (no Ubersampling) with an average of 41 FPS.. I turned on Fraps and I am getting in the 20 range for FPS yet my system has a lot more graphics power and more then twice the ram... I have double checked to make sure I have updated my GPU drivers to the most recent ones available... Is there a specific reason for why I can't run this game on Ultra with a decent frame rate?

I think you should see slightly better performance than the reviewed system. The 7870 is just one step above the 5870 (the 7850 is about the equal of the 5870), not "a lot more", but enough that you shouldn't see worse.

Have you tried turning Cinematic DOF off? This is a feature that seems to have become broken in EE. (The review you cited was version 1.1, which is well before EE.)

Well I turned Cinematic DOF off, and it didn't seem to make any difference... Could it just be that I am loading into an area that is raining? That might be murdering my FPS, it does kind of suck to put together a new rig with high end parts and not be able to run The Witcher 2 on max even without Ubersampling. (which AFAIK just murders your FPS for only a minor increase in graphical beauty)

I even dropped the settings from Ultra to High, and I am seeing a similar frame rate in the forest outside of Flotsam (while raining) I have no clue what is killing my FPS :(

These are the settings that I'm using with a reference Radeon HD 7850, 8GB RAM, on 1600x900 resolution. Ultra spec with the settings tweaked like this: Ubersampling off, SSAO off, Motion Blur off, Texture Memory Size to Very Large, LOD distance to Far. I just ran a short benchmark running around in Flotsam and Binduga: 57 FPS on average.

What actually is the heaviest on your FPS (after disabling Ubersampling) is the resolution, if you decrease it you will boost your FPS. If you don't want to decrease it then at least play with aspect ratio 16x9 (will cut 1920x1200 down to 1920x1080), don't increase LOD distance like I did but rather decrease it and additionally switch off antialiasing.

Why I'm using the settings I'm using: Ubersampling is the heaviest on the graphics card, it's the first natural choice to switch off, SSAO and Motion Blur are some of the more demanding settings plus I always disable Motion Blur anyway as I'm one one of those people who dislike the Motion Blur effect - it's a matter of personal preference. The increased Texture Memory Size when you have loads of RAM should help smooth the FPS and decrease the load on your graphics card a bit by pre-loading more details without the side effect of crashes. LOD distance to Far is also a matter of preference. Changes to cinematic DOF setting shouldn't really have much effect AFAIK.

Finally, if you really cannot pull 40 FPS with all these tweaks then perhaps you should check if your graphics card is not overheating. Is it OCd? If so clock it down.

You might find this thread helpful, as to what fps you can expect:

Long time TES modder. When the tools are released, hopefully, a TW2 modder.

too bad more people did not participate and list there specs and performance. Guess you got to be in that "click" thingy I keep hearing about to get replies to a topic that could help quite a few people that come here for the first few times..... ;)/>

Not sure what you mean by "click", I only heard about "clickers" on WoW and that was not something anyone aspired to be ;).

In any case, I check forums from time to time, whenever my responsibilities allow it, and I try to reply to a few threads whenever I can but I do not read up on all the ones that appeared in the meantime due to temporary constraints. I'm sorry that I missed yours. I hope that my reply in this here thread will be helpful to someone though.

It seems like the game is mostly playable if I just ignore the low FPS number showing and just play... it seems playable, with just a few slow downs outside in the large wilderness outside Flotsam... I used MSI Afterburner and found that my card only heats up to about 43-44 degrees and the fan is only at about 32-33% when I am playing. The graphics card bounces between 100% and 64% usage... I will try using the tweaks you suggested and seeing what kind of FPS I get.

The graphics card is overclocked, but Factory overclocked by MSI, Link to the exact card I have is here http://ncix.com/prod...ar&promoid=1405

I heard sarcasm in that reply about the "click" You know the group of people that have been here since the early days and most of them seem to ignore the newer guys/gals. However they chat back and forth like old ladys at a bingo session. It is a real shame.....I want to be more active on his board( as do others) and I know I have PMed and been PMed by some of the new users who see the same thing I do. Maybe they are just bored having been here so long. I get that. I have been a member on my car clubs site since 1998 and I rarely post there these days. However, that means I do not participate as a whole not just selective members only threads/responses etc...

I will say that Guy N Wah seems to be very helpful to the new guys and gals. One of the few old timers here that go out of their way to make newbs feel welcome and answer there questions even if they are easy and repetitive questions that could be answered with an easy search of the board. He is not the only one but seems to be the most active of the established guard here. Please understand I am not attacking anyone or stirring the pot. It is merely an observation....... maybe this post will open some eyes.

I hope so. I almost thought about not posting any more. It is a really bad feeling to check a post you made 24 hrs later and have 1 or 2 replies that are relevant. Just saying....

Generally speaking to any reference to overclocked would include factory overclocked cards as well.

@ Geralt the Riv . Not exactly sure what you mean by open some eyes . But I haven`t seen any degrading of newer users here.
Yes I saw your thread but it seemed to me it was more of a bragging rights thread more than anything and that`s ok too if you`re into that sort of thing. But most new users especially in the PC department don`t know what their system contains let alone know what overclocking even does. Besides which no two systems are exactly the same. I mean they might have the same identical hardware but that`s not the whole picture. The amount and kinds of software running in the background contributes a lot to how well a game runs . Not to mention adware and spyware that can slow games down considerably .
