Problem with save files.

07.01.2013 @ 16:36 #1

Hey guys, for some reason my save files keep getting corrupted in a weird way.

Chapter 1, I load a save I made near the river at night to kill some Drowners. After doing so, I go on my merry way continuing with the story up to the part where I entered the Salamandra hideout, all the while quick saving every now and then (the game also did some auto saves, probably ended up with about 10 saves all together). I died, so I hit load and instead of placing me outside the hideout where i quick-saved it took me back to the Drowners save.

The weird part is that anything I had on me when I made the save i loaded is still there, and any conversations i had still happened, but if there's a cut-scene, nothing happens when I activate it. I go to the inn, there's whats-her-name being hassled by the thugs, but when I walk up she just looks at me for a second and the cut-scene ends. None of the NPC's do their usual thing either. They just stand there. I can attack and kill them but it doesn't advance the plot. Im guesing this is because the save is telling the game Ive already done all this, but it doesn't update the map, my position, NPC's, anything outside my menu's and it's contents.

The only way Ive found around this is by making 3 quick-saves in a row whenever i wanna save, but if I do that I'll end up with a thousand saves that'll just slow down the game, and its slow enough as is being on an external HDD.

Anybody got any ideas as to what on earths going on?

It could be a bad sector on your hard drive causing this. Do you have enough space on your internal drive to install the game?

Could be. External HDD's been a little funny lately. I've got plenty of space on the C drive so I'll give it a shot =D.

Oh yeah, I'll be away for a couple days so I'll let you know the results when I'm back =P.

Tommy's advice is probably the solution to your problem, but you might also like to know that you can move saved games out of the usual folder. Just leave in the handful of saved games that you actually want to use right now and made a new folder somewhere else to keep your backup saved games in. If you need one of those backup games, you can add that game to your saves folder, but all those games don't have to clutter up your saves folder and slow down your game in the meantime.
Want to be IN a computer game? I'm making one, and I want a picture of you! See here for details.

I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.

I've also made a bunch of mods that fix bugs, kill annoyances or tweak gameplay; you can get those at the Witcher Nexus.

Hey, sorry for the delayed response. I put the game on the C drive and it runs, what feels like, 10 times quicker than it did on the external HDD. I still cant believe the difference lol. So far i haven't come across any save issues so i guess that's what the problem was. Considering how fast the game was supposed to run at, I'm guessing the slow speed of the HDD was causing the issues. Thanks for the help guys! =D
