So I just bought the game, and at the beginning of installation an error pops up that says

The following error has occurred on the file 'D:\System\witcher.exe'.
Access is denied.
(0x5)

Now what can I possibly do about that? I tried to ignore it and then when I tried to launch the game nothing happened.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm very excited to play this game.

Where'd you get your copy of the game? I don't believe that's a valid path for any file in any legitimate edition.

Half-Price Books, so IDK, I figured they'd have a legitimate version of any game. I got a gift-card for Christmas, went shopping for games, and saw The Witcher. I'd actually never heard of it but it looked fun at was $8.00 lol

Half-Price Books is a class act, and deals legitimately in used games, so there is something really not right about your installation.
There are two possibilities that come to mind directly.

One, this could be a read error on the DVD. These sometimes come up as "access denied", which isn't true, but it still happens. If it's a used game, check for scratches, scrapes, or smudges. I think this is the most likely cause.

Two, did you override the default install location when you tried to install the game? The Witcher tries to write witcher.exe to the system subfolder, so if you tried to install to D:\, it would try to write D:\system\witcher.exe; if this is not writable (say, D: is the DVD drive), it would break in this way or something close to it.

Try copying all files from the DVD onto your harddrive, and see if it can install from there?
Or, run the installer as administrator?
