Ok, I have no idea WHAT is going on, but for some reason my copy of TW2 hates my 360 controller. It works fine in Skyrim. Yes, it is an official wired controller. Yes I have the newest drivers appropriate for my system (Win 7 64 bit). Ok, now on to the symptoms. When I load the launcher via steam, the launcher pops up. I move the D-pad down. It will only let me highlight "Launch Game" or move back up to the X in the corner to close it. No other options. I press the A button to launch the game. It does. As soon as the game window appears (before any content is displayed), the light on my controller goes out. No options to switch to gamepad as it doesnt even show up for the game, but Steam still sees it as the guide button loads the appropriate screen for TW2 in Steam. I have yet to find a working solution. 16 GB took me DAYS to download, nearly a week, so I really do not want to reinstall the game.

+1,000,000 internetz to whoever helps me fix this...

Have you selected your xbox controller as input device in the options menu?

If you mean from the main menu -> Options -> Controls -> (insert appropriate term here), there is only keyboard listed. Just like all the other threads on the same subject. From the launcher, I see the keybindings for the controller, but cannot select anything there. So if there is an important option I am missing, where is it?

If you mean launcher>options then look to the lower center of the window for input settings, if you select that then there should be 2 tabs one for keyboard and another for gamepad. If it`s not there then you might want to do a game cache integrity check.

I recently got an xbox controller, so I'll go see if my game works with it!

EDIT:
I plugged in my controller, started the game, went to options and selected "Gamepad" by moving to the side, and then loaded a save game - works just fine!

Maybe you pressed A at the keyboard/controller selection point since you said you couldn't choose anything, instead of moving to the sides?

Its there. Problem is, the controller seems to "shut down" as soon as the window for the game is created. Light in the center goes off and no input is recognized by the game, only Steam. Pressing any button on it while the intro movies are played does nothing. A button, Start, Back, none of them skip the intro movies. I have to unplug and re-plug the controller just to get the lights on it to come back on.

I have tried moving both thumbsticks right and left at the controls menu, and the D-Pad as well. No input recognized. Still only keyboard listed. Attached below is my options screen with the controller settings pulled up as proof it is showing up before the main game window is created.

BINGO! Got it working finally. Pressed and held the "guide" button until it turned back on and now I have the controller working. Not sure if it makes a difference or not yet, but I "turned it back on" right as soon as the light went out and it let me skip the cinematics and load my last save. Do not know if it made a difference or not yet either, but had steam re-verify the cached files and only one failed verification. Let it run the "one time setup" that happens every time I load this game and now I am up and running. Will post back if the timing on the controller matters or not once I have had the time to verify it.

That sounds strange - try moving all the stuff in \redist to another folder, that should stop Steam from trying to install first-time-setup stuff again and again :)

Done that, still had it pop up the next time I launched it, but it went away MUCH faster this time. Odd thing about the controller now, is that it did not do the crap it did before. Once I plugged it in and launched the game from Steam, it stayed on the whole time. I would venture a (slightly intoxicated) guess that it was a one time thing getting the game to recognize the controller. As there are so many threads on this topic, I hereby put forth the motion to make a stickied/pinned thread on the issue with the methods to try that have been put forth in each topic on it so there won't be nearly as many threads on the subject or users asking for help.

I don't want to hijack this thread but has anyone gotten the game working with the xbox 360 controller emulator? I'm using a cheap USB controller and I can't seem to map the keys in the same way as on the xbox 360 controller. The controller looks like a Playstation one but with the emulator, I can map every key in the same way as the xbox 360 controller has, problem is, the game doesn't recognize any button changes I have done.

UPDATE: Got it working. The Witcher 2 now recognizes my gamepad as a xbox 360 controller and lets me remap the keys from the launcher.

Can't get my 360 controller to work. Chose "gamepad" as an input (clicked "OK" in the "gamepad" tab) and my 360 controller makes the PC make noises when it disconnects (evidence of its connection to the PC), but won't work for TW2. Controller light just blinks when I press it (as long as my Xbox is disconnected from power, otherwise it just turns on my Xbox). Have yet to control anything on the PC with the controller (except that noise when I wiggle the wire connecting it to the PC). I've followed all the instructions given in this thread. Any suggestions? Thanks

Do you have the PC software for XBOX installed that I linked earlier in this thread ? If you click start>control panel>Game Controllers does the 360 controller show there ?
