Unreadable text in Witcher 2 = stupidity

28.12.2012 @ 00:22 #1

The text size in the PC version is ridiculously, stupidly, small. So much so that the EE version is unplayable for me (there exist font size increase mods for earlier versions that do not work in the EE version).

However I believe that the 360 version has a built in option to make the text "SD" or "HD", or in other words, readable or unreadable.

I really cannot complain strongly enough about any developer that releases a game with text so small you have to practically press your nose to the screen and give yourself eye strain in order to read it. Why not just not bother having text in the game at all if you are going to do this. It is beyond stupid that they would do this.

Dragon Age was another culprit of this appalling crass stupidity, but fortunately there was a mod for that that made the text bigger.

Even though it should not be for private gamers to have to create mods so that players can actually read the damn text, it should be for the makers to create a readable UI in the first place.

They make it for HD screens. The smaller text is readable on those, and saves screen space, making for a smoother experience.

Now, I don't have an HD screen, so I understand your view completely. But that is the reasoning behind it.

I`m running in 1920 x 1080 and have no trouble reading the text. Maybe you have it running on a large screen?

I think the text is too small as well, and it's only legible in hi-res. Comfy Couch at Nexus mod rectified this, but I've installed it after the EE with no luck. I really hope CDPR takes a serious look at how they create the UI in future games because TW2's is no shining example.

Wow there's people who have problems with the font size :S Could you post a screenshot for us? I'm curious to see how small it really is.

I haven't even thought about the font. It serves its purpose by being readable. Like I don't know what else to say, seriously? You have issues about the font? Change resolution or something bro? Like I'm stunned. It's such a trivial complaint and not even the developers fault. If you have a monitor from 1995 then it's probably time to upgrade...
Tearing my hair out, trying to figure out why there aren't any non-human Witchers, or at least something equivalent to a Witcher oriented warrior.

Share your Skyrim characters here! Feel free to post pictures, tell a story, or whatever! It's all about dem adventures boios!

If so, they should have writen it on the box, among other minimal requirements, to play the game "your monitor must be at least that size".
Good luck trying to read these tiny fonts on 17 inch, 4:3 monitor.

No a 19 inch LCD. Even if it was a HD screen would that do anything other than make the text appear a bit sharper? I mean, it would still be the same unreadable size?

Actually I bought it in 2008 and it was a current ViewSonic model at the time.

But I do not see what difference it would make whether on a new or old screen. Tiny text will still be tiny text unless if the very latest monitors have some sort of text magnifying feature I am unaware of.

Also why do you think it is trivial not to be able to read the text in an RPG? If I give myself eye-strain every time I try to compare equipment stats or prepare ingredients for a potion, or read the journal or training tip panels, well this is not trivial.

P.S. I am running it at the native 1280x1024 res of my 19 inch screen.

I have tried smaller resolutions as in some other games that makes the text bigger, but not here. Here the text appears to be scaled by resolution to keep it at the same tiny level.

I would actually be happy to run at non-native resolutions if it meant I could play the game.

That surprises me to be honest. I often use subtitles option in games (apart from witcher actually) and in never had any problem with the size of font, played dragon age with subtitles too and never noticed anything like that. Even if that really is a problem for some people depending on pc specs they are using or others factors, i would not go that far as too call it stupidity. I would assume its not a problem for most people. Personally, i didn't have any problem with journal or equipment text aswell. I guess in next games devs could provide options to enhance the size of text. Should be relatively easy to do, at least with subtitles.

Have you tried this mod http://witcher.nexusmods.com/mods/272 , you want the 9b version ? Once extracted then rename ccouchdhud.dzip to aa_ccouchdhud.dzip so that it loads before the abetterui.dzip file.

As someone who had a 19 inch screen and played the witcher 2 many times before finally getting a 1920 by 1080 monitor I really don't see what you are talking about. I had no problem reading the text.

I played Witcher 2 on 17 inch monitor in 1280x1024 and the only problem I had was with the "tutorial" panels (which I didn't really pay attention to anyway). I switched to 1920x1080 just lately and wasn't struck by text being clearer or anything.

The text that I think he`s talking about is the text that appears over the heads of characters as they speak at a distance.

This is what I'm referring to. The combat log as well. The text is small and fuzzy on my monitor ( 1680x1050 ). I just found it pretty annoying myself, trying to make out the stats of the gear and whatnot.

Did you try the 9b version I linked to earlier and then rename it as to my earlier post? If so did it do anything?

Ok, that did it. Thanks Tommy. Posted ImageThe mod is definitely an improvement. Is there a way to modify the transparency of the combat log? I think transparency was increased with CC.
