I am a gamer from the old school – from the generation that launched them. Played them from the C-Prompt on DOS screens and loaded them from true floppy disks (not the little hard ones) back in the day. I cannot defeat the Kayran because my beat up old hands are not up to the technical challenge. RPGs and Strategy games, unlike Shooters, were never intended to be about how skillful one is at dancing around a keyboard or controller (in my case) but this game, in spite of its many good points, has made a major mistake in making that a requirement for success. I will never be able to conquer this boss. It actually hurts to try. So, is there a way to simply skip it and move on? If not, I will just have to shelve this game. (Not really a problem – except for the wasted money – which does suck.) The revamped Baldur’s Gate – best RPG ever – is out so I will happily move back into that universe and leave this one behind.)

There are several people here who will play you past the Kayran, then send you the saved game from that point.

So, upload your saved game somewhere (zip it first, please!), then contact

Costin Moroianu or

Slimgrin or

Tommy

This thread belongs in the Chapter 1 section of the TW2 subforum, so I'm moving it there.

Pretty much what Cory said. There are some mods on Witcher nexus that give you a god mode but I am not sure if they work with the current game version. ( Check this page: http://witcher.nexusmods.com/mods/254 )

I'm not sure that mods help with QuickTime events like the Kayran, but they might make the rest of the game more fun for you.

If the God Mode mod isn't up to date, it's pretty easy to make one yourself. Follow the Witcher Wiki's instructions on Extracting the Witcher 2 files to get access to the data, select the geralt_basic.xml file, then edit it with Notepad ++ or something similar.

Change the first line of that file that's under the heading "Vitality Group" to something like

Quote

<vitality mult="false" always_random="false" min="10000" max="10000"/>

and you should be good to go for awhile. ;)

Although you've probably thought of it, be sure difficult QTE's are disabled in the main menu as well.

Good point!

Here's how, if you haven't done it yet:

And just to let you know, if you do decide that you'd like someone to play past it for you, you can also upload the savegame from just before the fight to a hosting site like mediafire and post the link here in the forums.

That way, whoever happens to be around can pick it up and play it through for you.

I appreciate the replies and the suggestions. Pretty much a week end warrior insofar as games are concerned so will think it over and decide what direction to take. (Seems I should also be able to load the save to my site and link a download to it there also but I will take a look at the other options mentioned.)

LOOKING FOR A SOMEONE TO KILL THE KAYRAN: Okay, I give up. Tried it again but there is just no way I can work the camera with one control (since it does not track with the character - what a total and unexplainable pain that is), move the character around with another control, watch for the QTE prompts (invest money and talent into creating fabulous graphics and then force the user to miss them because they are focused on looking for little prompts to pop up on the screen - now there's a good idea for you), let go of the controller so I can flip the character's magic around with various keyboard commands, and then grab the controller again so I can do some of the other stuff again - all with arthritic hands. And just so I can finally watch my character kill the big bad guy - in a freakin movie! Gorgeous game. Great story line. Very refreshing and very adult. Love the humor. Loved Witcher 1 so bought the sequel. Did not realize they had tried to morph a very unique RPG into some kind of hybrid shooter/action thing that is all about hand skills (like Crysis 10 or Stupid Mario Brothers 112 - or whatever those type games are up to) instead of brain skills or surely would have skipped it.

Still, I would like to finish the damn thing if I can - so enough bitching. There is a link below to a .zip file with a save before the Kayran fight. If someone could play me past it I would be most grateful. Just tell me where to fetch the file when it is done.

dekventures.com/Witcher2/DanSave.zip

Thanks

I'll be curious to know if I did this right. I signed up with Media Fire and copied the link to the new Karyan save. Anyway, it's dead.

Thanks, slimgrin

That link only has the .bmp file. I will also need the .sav file. You may have to put the 2 files into a zip file and upload that. Other option would be to load the .sav up and provide a separate link to that.

Thanks again

I didn't try it because I still don't have the game reinstalled, but it looks like a good save.

I am a thankin' ya, slimgrin, - it is indeed a good save and the bad guy is indeed dead as dead can be. It is my sincere hope that I can muddle through the rest of this technical mess of a game without assistance.

It is a sad situation when someone who has been playing computer games as long as I have is forced to play a game on Easy and still get help to kill a boss monster - all because of a very poorly designed and far too technical user interface. That should never happen in a game designed for a mass market. And it especially should never happen in an RPG. Technically challenging controls are way down on the list of things that most RPG players are looking for in a game. Maybe the designers will address that issue in any future editions.

Glad it worked. I noticed something was wrong in your file regarding the meter prompt that appears when Geralt snags the tentacle and goes for a ride. It hovered automatically at about 3/4 full, when in fact it should start at zero and fill as you attack the tentacle. I don't know if that was throwing you off. I just clicked away and the scenario played out like it should. The Kayran is actually the easiest boss from a tactical standpoint. I can't emphasize enough making your build copacetic with how you want to play. This includes the gear you use, the potions you quaff, the runes you inscribe. Everything overlaps. The forum has plenty of combat strategies you can look up. If you need help again just PM me.

@slim - thanks for helping out. And the good news is that I've just been told that my video card has arrived so I can hopefully start contributing again soon :)

@Dan'l - I suspect that CDPR have already realised that the QTE system does cause problems for some people so yes, hopefully they'll improve on it the next time. There's quite a few of us slower old-timers around playing the game, some who have problems with this fight, many who don't. Systems that are below minimum spec, or close to minimum spec but not optimised for the game, also seem to be responsible for a lot of the problems. So feel free to post your specs/settings and see if anyone can advise on any fine-tuning.

The good news for you though is that as long as you have Difficult QTE turned off, you're unlikely to have this kind of block again later in the game. Most people only seem to have it with the ballista in the prologue and with the kayran.

And don't forget to loot (assuming slim didn't do that for you), and to claim your reward from the merchant.
