I accidentally found out that heavy attack can attack multiple opponents if they are adjacent to your targeted enemy. His skills aren't needed to be upgraded to take advantage of this, and it helped greatly at early stages. As far as I can remember, I wasn't able to do this before Ver 2.0. Was this a new updated feature from one of patches or was this available from the beginning?

Since when Geralt's heavy attack had area damage?

Yeah, I noticed in a probably related issue that the combat log sometimes says 0 damage was dealt, but the enemy health bar goes down anyway. I think the numbers that the players can see are not necessarily the same as the actual numbers the game uses. Don't know how or why, and I haven't played the game before EE so I wouldn't know if this is a new issue (though I don't think so).

I don't think this is a "whirl" or "area damage" effect, but more likely a consequence of targeting changes made in 2.0. Targeting is very fluid after the 2.0 update, and I believe Geralt will even switch targets during a combination.
