Also a quote from Wasteland 2's facebook about this.

"You might have read the news that we have a pre-production team looking into a Torment game. The link is below for those interested. We are excited to be contemplating a project for the Wasteland 2 team to roll onto AFTER they are done. In the interest of over communicating, we want to make it quite clear that NO production would happen on Torment until after Wasteland 2 is near complete nor would any Wasteland monies be spent on Torment. You have given us a great opportunity to work on Wasteland 2 the way we want and we would never lose sight of that. We are feverishly working on an important update video that show off the HUD, combat, conversation and more."

This is probably to calm down kickbackers fearing their funds will partly be funnelled into Torment, but by that emphasis (yours or theirs?) on "after", could this open up for Avellone? I know they've said before he won't be involved, but if not much will be done with Torment until after completion of Wasteland 2, then he should at least have an opportunity time-wise to be involved.

Well like I said before there's no guarantee but as it currently stands (according to inXile's and Obsidian's estimates) Wasteland 2 will be done in October 2013 and Project Eternity will be done in April 2014. So that's about 6 months of time in-between them that Avellone shouldn't be able to join (unless by that point his work as lead writer will be done then). From what I read somewhere else Fargo's schedule for developing Wasteland 2 was 6 months of planning everything out, 6 months of development, and 6 months of finishing everything up so if he adopts the same schedule for the successor then that means Avellone could come in right during the start of development. Wish I had more than speculation but that's all I got.
EDIT: Here's Goerge Ziets's thoughts on this. For the record George Ziets was the creative lead on Mask of the Betrayer.

"It sounds exciting to me. I like what I’ve read about Numerera. The world reminds me a lot of Gene Wolfe’s New Sun series of books, which has always been on my short list of promising RPG settings. Plus Monte Cook and Colin McComb are involved, which provides a bridge to both the setting of the original game and its development as a CRPG.

And with Kevin Saunders as project director, I think development will be well-planned and organized, which is crucially important. Our design process on Mask of the Betrayer was the best of any game I’ve worked on, and that was largely thanks to Kevin.

Everything I’ve heard suggests that InXile is trying to stay as true to the spirit of the original as they can, including things like “lots of text,” which I never thought I’d hear from a (non-indie) game developer again, but which makes me very happy. For those concerned about a lack of portals and planes in the spiritual sequel, I’d check out Cook’s short story, the Amber Monolith. In addition to evoking the atmosphere of the New Sun books, it makes clear that the science fantasy equivalent of portals and planar travel are very much possible in the new setting: http://www.numenera....amber-monolith/

Amazing news! I feel like the 90's are coming back, with better graphics and crowd funded.

And about the name, I understand the direction they're taking. PST is after all a game about the torment of many and one person in particular, about choice and consequence, and about story-telling. If these elements define a Torment game, then there *could* be another Torment game in a non Planescape setting and completely unrelated to the first. In the remote case this project fails (i.e. a terrible game) I don't think it would stain the name of PLANESCAPE: Torment.

I read somewhere (I think?) that they settled for real-time with pause. If it is anything like Baldur's Gate II or Icewind Dale 2, I think it's great. For great turn-based, we (will) have Wasteland 2.

They haven't settled on anything yet. On RPG Codex Colin McComb said they are still kicking around ideas and in a few interviews Kevin Saunders also said the same thing.

OK then. I'm fine with both. I think the turn-based combat from Fallout is excellent, and so is the RTwP combat from BGII/ID2.

I've read the articles and I'm very confused. I gather that they can't use the Planescape setting due to copyright. So would it even be possible to make a sequel? Do they have the rights to any of the characters? I can't imagine a game being a sequel to Torment if it doesn't take place in Planescape or involve any of the characters. What exactly would there be to tie it to the first game?

Or is this just supposed to be a brand new game that they want to live up to Torment in terms of emphasis on story and such?

It's the latter since they wanted to make a spiritual successor. Even if they actually got the Planescape license I doubt they would have used any of the characters from Torment anyway.

"And on the GREAT news front.... Mark Morgan has agreed to compose the soundtrack for our new game. Torment: Tides of Numenera."

Mark Morgan is good news. The title sounds pretty cool, though i wonder what they are going for with the phrase "tides of Numenera". Maybe "tides" are the psuedo-planes of Numenera?

There's a story/thematic reason for "Tides", yeah. They'll talk about it more later.

I'm assuming it's the tides of great civilisations that have swept over Numenera throughout time, cresting and then withdrawing, leaving the land changed with their passing. The modern day players will be scavengers on the beach, hiding in what has been washed ashore and puzzling over the footsteps in the sand.

Nice metaphor really.

Edit: Whoa, I was fucking way off, must have been struck down with a bad case of verbal diarrhea.
I was once asked by a journalist what my thoughts were on the modern world slipping into ignorance and apathy, I told him, "I don't know and I don't fucking care!"

Well there still isn't a date for the kickstarter but they launched a website to give suggestions for pledges and the like.

TW3 news and speculation, Wasteland 2 gameplay footage, regular Project Eternity updates, and now this? Give me a break! Give me my life back!

But I am secretly enjoying all this :P
