That's a typical problem in Bioware games especially imo. Almost everyone is made to be either stupid, impotent or insane, to make it look like your PC is important, when more often then not, he's not and can actually be stupid, impotent or insane himself.

Bioware strokes the player ego. That's their formula and I have to wonder if they'll ever get away from it.

The funny thing is, i've played games where it is the other way around, where the atmosphere and setting trump the players sense of agency, such as in Diablo 2 (not Diablo 1, I still hold it up as a thing of rare beauty) and Icewind Dale. Though I didn't massively enjoy them, they didn't rouse my ire like the more style over substance Bioware games do. The Witcher games, old Ultimas and most of Obsidians output seem to straddle the fence between the two extremes perfectly.

They don't spare the details or logical consequences, but they aslo know how to make the players achievements worthy rather than risible.
I was once asked by a journalist what my thoughts were on the modern world slipping into ignorance and apathy, I told him, "I don't know and I don't fucking care!"
