Next Sapkowski's book will be about Geralt of Rivia
07.11.2012 @ 13:18 #1
Probably most of you already know that Spakowski is working on next book in Geralt's universe, but now it's known for sure that book will be about Geralt of Rivia. Sapkowski said it in interview for polish edition of Eurogamer. Also book won't mention anything that happened in the games, because for Spakowski games are completely non-canonical and he don't know anything about plot in them.

can you give us a link please? and I hope the remaining books get translated into english, though the fan translations are pretty good work done by dedicated fans

What exactly are the Witcher books about then? If they're not about Geralt, then who or what is in focus? I was under the impression that Geralt was the protagonist and we were following him on his journeys in the Northern Kingdoms.
Tearing my hair out, trying to figure out why there aren't any non-human Witchers, or at least something equivalent to a Witcher oriented warrior.

Interview is now on international Eurogamer. Mind that some parts are lost in translation. For example in interview he said that real stories about witcher are only in books (games are only adaptation based on books) and he won't do anything to make any connection between books and games, but after translation it sounds like he said that only way to tell story is writing a book.

They were about Geralt of Rivia too, but everyone thought that books will be about someone else, because Geralt's fate at the end of saga was really complicated (as you know from the games).

Then it turns out that Spakowski actually writes the same plot as the games lol. Does he even like the games? I remember an interview where he said "You must know a lot about the plot to make a game like that" or something but I don't know if he liked it,maybe he just did it for the booze money.
OFFTOPIC:Is the forum acting weird? every time I press backspace it sends me to the previous page even as I type here in the text box.

In italian, at moment, we have just the first 3 books. I hope that all the others and this new one too will be translated, sooner or later

take that to the depths of forever,
and you still will barely have a glimpse

My comment under that EG english article:
This is very dissapointing, but not surprising at all. Sapkowski has been always grumpy old man. Doesn't change the fact that Witcher is my favourite book saga of all time though. And also doesn't change the fact that CDP's fantastic sequels are CANON in my eyes, whether Sapkowski considers them that or not.

Its great that it doesnt have to do anything with the games, i mean come on, the "excuse" that the games use about how geralt revives, and oh my god he has amnesia so we have to meet all the characters again so its okay even if you didnt read the books, its all just sacrifice for gameplay.
Im perfectly okay with that because games imho have to do everything they must for gameplay and proper execution, sacrificing whatever is needed.
A book is just the story.
Plus the book doesnt even have to happen after The Lady of the Lake 2, it could totally be about some past adventures of Geralt.
Lol so much hate in the comments on eurogamer, i liked what Sapkowski said, i disagree with "a story can only be contained in a book", but then again, maybe he meant that games could never tell a story as good as a book, wich is absolutely true.

I read through the English version of the interview and it didn't really say anything new. Does the Polish version say more about the new book? Like when it will take place compared to the previous books? I'm guessing before since he said in another question that we aren't supposed to know what happens to Geralt after the fifth novel and he probably won't write it (I don't think he'd say that if he had already started writing it
).

Since I can't read Polish I have to go with the English version of the interview. And I have to say, Sapkowski comes across as your average old grumpy science fiction/fantasy writer who holds his own work up to a perfect gold standard and adaptations are significantly less. Reminds me of Frank Herbert's refusal to have Iron Maiden's 'To Tame a Land' be called 'Dune'. I honestly never heard about Sapkowski or his work before 'The Witcher' game series. I've read 'The Last Wish' because of them. Nevertheless, I compliment him for giving his blessing to CDP Red.
No client-based DRM in disguise.

Any writer who knows his trade will make the same demands. Your titles are your stock in trade. If somebody else is going to use them, you need assurance that they will not be used badly. Sapkowski was burned by the TV series and so-called movie. For him to bless CDPR's work is actually a very strong statement that he believes they have done well and will continue to do well by his title.
And for him to say that the games are neither prologue nor sequel nor alternative histories is not mere grumpiness but a flat statement of fact. The canonical history of Witcher Geralt is his to tell, for so long and for so much as he is willing to tell it, and nobody else's.
I don't agree with his statement that only a book can tell a story. But I also concede that it is not an unreasonable statement for a writer of books to make.
