Will REDKit Improve the sales and will people play the mods?
07.10.2012 @ 20:08 #1
I was just wondering, will the toolset (REDKit) improve the sales of the Witcher 2?
And will people play the mods? I've often wondered why the modding community for The Witcher PALES in comparrison to the likes of Dragon Age, Fallout 3, and Oblivion. Fallout 3 and Oblivion have mods that have been downloaded a million times. Will this ever be the case with The Witcher 2 when the REDkit comes out?

It will renew some interest I suppose, but I don't think it will be all that much.

Hmm sky is the limit well you can try .I am sure that all comunnity members will help one way or another. But 1/4 of a million gamers pale -even for W2- pale. Anyway let's get started ,and for some help . I will try to summarize the thoughts of the other 200 thousand people out there ,to get you motivated.

Just look at the numbers and THINK for a minute. For a million people to download a mod for The Witcher, EVERY person who bought the game would have to download it. We can't even get every person who bought the game to download the freaking PATCHES, for heaven's sake.
As Slimgrin and Costin have both pointed out, the Witcher games don't sell nearly as many copies as the Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls games do, so OF COURSE their modding communities are smaller. You might as well ask why game X doesn't sell as many copies in Monaco or Liechtenstein as they do in the United States or Japan.
I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.
I've also made a bunch of mods that fix bugs, kill annoyances or tweak gameplay; you can get those at the Witcher Nexus.

REDkit will get some attention, but it's naive to think, that it will be downloaded millions of times. First of all: CD Projekt and The Witcher brand are not as famous, as Bethesda and their games. TES has HUGE community from all over the world. Second: The Elder Scrolls games are sandboxes. You can make much more mods unrelated to the story, because world is enormous and level of interactivity is really high. Much higher than CDPR's games. TW1&2 are based on the story, and community is small when you're comparing it to the well known brands like TES or Fallout. Also modding tools will be released almost two years after main game. I hope it's not late. Popularity is not the only reason for making mods. It's not even most important. More important is satisfaction. Also if you want to work in this industry, making mods is a good start. It's great way to gain some experience.

I want to see people implement their ideas in the kit, I want to see new features bloom from it, I want to see new quests built from the ground up. I want to see new cities, new enemies and new armors. Because all of that, is possible in the Bethesda creation kit. If REDkit can rival that, then sure. I think there's gonna be a lot of people that are gonna buy the game. Who knows, maybe some brave soul makes an Arena mod where coop is available. That alone will sell copies.
I'll wait until I get to use the product myself but as of now, I don't think it'll boost any sales.

This Community is mature, smart and most important, harmonious and willing to help each other.
I think the REDkit will be a great success for the witcher followers but will not make any kind outside community interest.

I understand that English isn't everyone's first language (personally, it's my third language) but since this is an English forum could you at least try to write in a coherent and clear manner so that other people can actually understand what the fuck you're talking about? 'Cause I understood about 25% of that, at best. Make an effort or find a Greek forum. I'm sure the moderators could help you with that.

Actually Witcher 2 sold more then 2 million copies as of this moment ( fairly certain about that ), whereas DA2 sold about the same number though somewhat higher. Keeping in mind however that DA2 is mainstream BS and Witcher 2 is not.
Sorry I can't resist the chance to bash Dragon Age at every turn nowadays.

Actually, The Witcher 2 sold about 2 million copies, and was pirated about 5 million times. So at least 1.5 million people still play TW2, if not even more.

Yes, exactly, I'm NOT getting paid for it, so downloading of my mods is the only thing I have left. Why would you spend hundreds of hours on a mod if nobody is going to play it?

Regarding the modding community from my point of view is not that important the number of people modding the game itself...
Of course, TES community is huge, but they are well known and people started making mods on TES quite long ago, so it's more than normal that the community keeps growing almost each day, but honestly, if the guys from CD Project will supply a good starting point for the documentation it will be very helpfull for all of us, and since they said that you can do almost everything via visual scripting ( thank god! ) it will be more friendly than other engines.
Honestly mods are really helpfull to keep the game alive, so CD Project made a good choice to let us play with the engine, and I can't wait to start modding the entire game.
Once the REDKit will be released it will be up to us to keep the game alive, by modding it and make new, original mods for this fantastic game, and this is what I like about mod tool, that you can shape the world as you like, how you like, and share it with the rest of the world...if you mod the game because you want to see just lots of downloads you completely missed the point of modding: its something that you do for yourself because you want to do your own thing, and most likely share it with the world to let them enjoy what you create.
The Witcher 2, as already mentioned, is not a very popular game, but it sold 2 milions copies and has been largely acclaimed, so with Cyberpunk their popularity will grow more, considering that is a rather small studio that developed a great game, that is quite something to be proud! and, of course, with Cyberpunk more and more people will play the game, means more players, means more modders, means community growing...
I just hope that they will use standard format for the assets ( like FBX ) and not a custom plugin, because since I'm a Softimage user it 100% that they'll never make an exported, so lets hope for the best!
Cheers
