Gamescom is in full swing as our team is hosting a series of exclusive media presentations showing the REDkit, a long-awaited set of tools for modders which will allow players to create their own content for the PC version of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, such as new, non-linear adventures, great looking locations and much more.

With REDKit being officially announced now we are accepting applications from modders around the world to participate in its closed beta. In order to make the REDkit even better and more accessible, we want to hear your feedback! If you want to be involved in the process of bringing REDkit to public, don’t wait any longer and apply for your access in our beta now.

Fill out all the required information on a special website we’ve prepared  and simply click on the SEND button. We will be taking applications until the end of Sunday (30/09/2012). Soon after that, our team will make the selections and we will inform everyone about the results. Participants who will be chosen for the next stage will have a chance to test the REDkit and shape the future of The Witcher 2 modding community.

So if you have no one made, as me, you cannot sign for it.

The one question I have, is what would be the level of effort/responsibility/reporting CDPR expects from the beta testers? Are we supposed to fill out a questionaire after use? Write an essay? Open tickets? Continuous feed back?
I would love to sign up for it, but first I'd need to know what it is expected from the beta testers.

I would've liked to give it a swing in the beta but I got absolute zero experience in modding.

I would love to take part in this because I definitely have the creative element in me...but I'm a bit lacking in the technical. Is it easy to use or at least easy to learn?

Thanks for thinking of me, guys, but no, I won't be applying. For one thing, TW2 doesn't excite me in the same way that TW1 did. For another thing, I'm working on a stand-alone game of my own, so I'm pouring my energy into that and not into modding.

If CDPR asked me to look at the REDkit as a service to them, I would, because I have a lot of love and loyalty for them. But I won't be submitting an application, and my guess is that they'll get plenty of beta testers without me.

Once the kit is out, I'm sure that plenty of NEW modders will come along and do wonderful things with the REDkit! There's lots of passion and lots of creativity in this community.

(Speaking of that stand-alone game of my own, I need some photographs of people for it, so I'd love it if anyone I've helped or anyone who's enjoyed one or more of my mods -- or even just anyone who thinks it would be cool to be IN a computer game -- contributed a picture.)
Want to be IN a computer game? I'm making one, and I want a picture of you! See here for details.

I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.

I've also made a bunch of mods that fix bugs, kill annoyances or tweak gameplay; you can get those at the Witcher Nexus.

The fact that they're doing this as a "closed beta" with candidates to submit qualifications should mean that they are expecting both a certain level of sophistication and experience with mod work and a willingness to engage in closed-loop interaction with the developers and with a product that is at first incomplete or even flawed.

It should not mean just filling out a questionnaire or writing a review. It should mean you are willing to use the mod tools regularly, you don't have to be taught how to do modding, you file trouble tickets when something doesn't work or you don't like the way it works, and you interact with the developers to get those problems resolved to your satisfaction, or at least to theirs.

That's the same thing my company does when it announces a beta. Of course, we have a smaller customer base and a sales team that pre-qualifies beta customers; we don't have to put out a public call for them. But the principle is the same. A closed beta customer must be a sophisticated customer willing to work through a number of difficulties along with the support and development teams.

Note that this should be NOTHING LIKE the more common "closed beta, first 250 applicants get a copy" promotion widely used in the game software business. CDPR should be applauded for demanding qualifications of its beta customers and for using this closed beta for its proper purpose and not as a marketing stunt.

If they're savvy, it also doubles as a recruitment tool.

Thinking about it. I need to see how much free time I actually have these days.......................
Long time TES modder. When the tools are released, hopefully, a TW2 modder.

I'd prefer to hear from someone within CDPR what is it they are actually expecting, but thanks :)

Only your dreams? Damn, I thought the core purpose of modding is to share your work with the community :P
