Help Please! I Deleted Some Old Saves > Now Lag Is Horrible
26.07.2012 @ 01:09 #1
I'm very stressed atm : P Aside from the glitch yesterday with the launcher not working, my Witcher 2 has been running seamlessly... until now.
About an hour ago I decided to clean up my save game files. There was nothing wrong - I just figured the list of save games was looking long and I might as well delete old ones. I'm only at the early part of chapter 1, but I've been hitting Quick-save a lot.
I went to the Load Game menu, scrolled to the bottom of the list, to my 1st saves, and starting manually deleting them 1 by 1. I think I deleted about 6 or 7 maybe and the game suddenly crashed.
So I re-launched the game. When I got back to the Load Game screen though, I noticed my mouse movement seemed sluggish, but I wasn't sure if anything was wrong at first. When I got in-game, I noticed that when I move my mouse to turn the camera, it was really laggy. It's horrible actually, and stressing me out a lot.
Before the crash from deleting old saves I had zero lag. Zero. My game was running beautifully.
I don't know what to do to fix this.
I read some people saying that when you get too many save games on Steam it can become a problem, and people were saying to delete the save files...
1) I don't see how. I checked in C: > Users > Name > My Documents > Witcher 2 > gamesaves ... It only shows 5 save files there, and those files are really small. I'm on Windows 7 by the way. There are 3 different ones called AutoSave, 1 called ManualSave, and 1 called QuickSave. Where are the 100 or so saves I see when I'm in-game??
2) That suggestion about deleting old saves or moving them to a new folder seemed to be in response to people having lag or mouse lag... But I HAD ZERO lag until I started deleting the Save game files from the in-game Load menu screen. So I wonder what the problem is.
I did notice that after I re-launched and then shut down TW2 that Steam was sitting there trying to sync, and failing. Don't know if that's related.
If anyone can please help me with this, I'd be very appreciative. I am really Not very tech savvy at all, so please give any advice in very detailed steps for a total layman using windows 7. Thanks : )

I tried closing and re-loading the game several times. I went away for a while and let Steam finally finish its synchronization. I tried to see if I could just play the game as it is... I can't it's really horrible. It would make me nauseous so fast, with it's laggy camera movements, and delayed mouse, it's super painful to play like it is.
And there was nothing at all wrong a couple of hours ago. I had zero lag at all in any way. All I did was go and delete some old save files just cuz I thought it would e a good idea, but there was no lag ahead of time. When I started deleting the old files the game crashed. When I re-launched it I suddenly had crazy lag / mouse-lag, where there had been none before.
Please help.

Answer: I don't think I did anything like that. I used the in-game delete. I was in the middle of playing, and my game was running perfectly. I was saving a game and noticed that my list of save games looked long so I decided to delete some. I remained went to the Load Game screen, highlighted the earliest old save, clicked on Del, and confirmed Yes when it asks if you're sure you want to delete. (in most games I play I tend to delete all but my most recent saves or a couple others if they are at points in the game I think I'll want to re-play later). I have never in my life before had a game that crashed because I used the in-game button to delete old save game files.
You also asked: "Did you accidentally delete the settings file so maybe it's trying to run the game on Ultra rather than what you had it set at previously?"
Answer: see first answer. I used the in-game Del button. I will check though when next load the game to see if my video settings are still as I left them. And thank you for the suggestions : ) Please write more ideas that might help if you have them.
To *Tommy*: Thanks for replying to my plea for help. I had read the first post in that thread. I replied to that thread last night when this happened. I think my post is still the last one. I'm not sure what to do based on that first post though (I'm really a total beginner when it comes to anything technical with computers). I'll attach that 1st post here if you can perhaps help point me to which part of that post can help me please, and what I need to do to get my game to work again.
P.S. I only just downloaded The Witcher 2 on Sunday I think it was, or maybe Saturday night. I got it directly from my Steam application who was advertising it. I didn't change any Save game options - I left everything at default aside from slightly adjusting my graphics settings before I started playing it. But the graphics settings I chose ran perfectly smoothly and beautifully with no lag whatsoever. The game only started to have the problem of all the lag after the sudden crash when I deleted a few old save games from within the in-game Load Game screen. Immediately before that crash my game was running perfectly with zero lag at all.
P.P.S. I didn't have the game before this week and my initial download was the EE so I don't have any saves from before the Enhanced Edition. That's all I ever had. So it wouldn't be a compatibility issue with versions.
Also, I don't know how to see if my game is saving to Cloud or not. I didn't even know there was such a thing until I hit this problem and started looking for help. All I did was click Save or hit F5 to quicksave. I assumed the game was saving the same as any game I've had saves. After this problem started yesterday I went to look at my save game files on my computer, and was confused to see only 5 saves in the folder: It has 3 ManualSave files, 1 AutoSave file, and 1 QuickSave file. That's all. I didn't understand where the 30 or so save game files I saw in-game went.
---------------------------
I just wanted to highlight a few points about cloud saving on the Steam version of The Witcher 2:
When you select to enable cloud storage, you can choose to copy over your existing saves. Please note that we can't guarantee compatibility between older versions and the Enhanced Edition and that saves in the third act are not compatible due to the large number of changes and improvements it's had. Our recomendation is starting a new game.
Unfortunately it should be noted that because new files are created, the file modification times are lost, and so the order of the save files may be incorrect, so be wary of hitting continue straight away (New saves will have the correct time stamps so it shouldn't remain a problem for long).
Your original save files in "My Documents\" will remain safe and untouched if cloud saving is enabled.
The new save location will look something like: C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\<steamid>\20920\remote\. (If you're the only person who uses your steam install, then there should only be one or two directories inside "userdata\")
Insane saves are not stored on the cloud to prevent cheating/exploiting the one death rule.
Once enabled, you will always use the steam method of saving games, turning off cloud saving in the menu will simply stop storing saves on the cloud, and only have them stored locally.
If you wish to return to the old method of saving games ("My Documents\"), you will need to delete all save games stored on the cloud and in the steam directory, and then turn off steam cloud saving in the menu.
In the Steam library, if you right click->properties and go to the "updates" tab, you'll see how much space you have available for storing files on steam cloud. When you reach this limit, don't worry, your oldest saves will be automatically removed from the cloud (but not from your hard drive) to make space for new ones
If you have any problems with cloud saving, please reply to the post and I'll do my best to investigate what's going wrong for you
April 27
There was a minor update for The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition on Steam today, this fixes the problem with cloud saving failing to create new saves when the 100MB limit is reached.

did you try to backup all your saves ( from both Documents\witcher2\gamesaves and from Steam\userdata\<steamid>\20920\remote\ ), delete them all from those folders, disable Cloud saving for Witcher2 and then put the saves in the Documents/Witcher2/gamesaves folder?

(not for Steam) Enhanced Edition gives you "application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)" error? See here

I need help with this please if this is the necessary course of action.
1. How do I backup the saves please? Where do I back them up to? Can you give me step by step directions?
2. In: Documents\witcher2\gamesaves all I see is:
AutoSave_0000.sav
AutoSave_0000_640x360
AutoSave_0002.sav
ManualSave_0001.sav
QuickSave.sav
3. In: Steam\userdata\<steamid>\20920\remote\ all I see is:
autosave_0105.sav
autosave_0105_640x360
manualsave_0106.sav
quicksave.sav
quicksave_640x360
4. Can you tell me step by step perhaps how to disable Cloud saving for Witcher2 please?
Thanks much

Go: Options> Disable steam cloud
Easy peasy to turn off.
However, I have also had issues with steam cloud in the past. I decided to turn it on one day and it moved ALL my saves from my documents and placed them in the steam userdata folder. I noticed an appreciable drop in performance after that event.
I am going to try moving the saves from the steam folder to the mydocs folder now and see if it makes a difference.
**edit**
Okay, so it seems that after I enabled steam cloud, the steam userdata folder for the witcher 2 becomes the main read/write location.
Mara, did you enable steam cloud from the start? Because the saves in your MyDocs seems to be the older saves than the ones in the userdata.
I am interested as I am having similar issues.
It's a legitimate form of sorcery....

When all that completed the game launched. I loaded my save game and aside from a momentary stutter, it seemed to be back to working smoothly and normally. No more lag. No more delay with mouse and keyboard. Hmmm...
So I exited the game and re-launched it to see what would happen. It did the same 3 processes again I think. It did the long .NET 4 thing again. I was worried it would do that every time I started the game form now on : P
Once I loaded my save game again everything seemed to be running perfectly. So I exited the game and re-started it once more to see if I needed to ask for help with the .Net 4 thing now... but this time it only did the 1 little Microsoft VC Redist process again, then launched normally : ) Load times are super quick again, and the game is running flawlessly.
But why? What was broken? And how did it get fixed? This whole thing with stuff breaking out of the blue and then fixing themselves is disconcerting to say the least.
If I'm likely to run into more problems because of the connection to Steam, I would prefer to get off the Steam connection now. Is there an easy way to get the game to put all my saves from now on into my computer and NOT onto Steam, and not to try to sync with Steam at all? Should I not worry about it?
@Espressopronto : I only got the game this week and it was from Steam and I simply used F5 to save or the manual save from the menu - I had no clue the save games had anything to do with Steam, but I didn't change anything at any point.
I would guess that the discrepancy from my Steam saves on my computer vs. Witcher2 saves on my computer is from when I went and deleted some saves using the in-game Del button on the Load Game screen.
*! I don't want that problem to repeat though! Should I ignore the fact that I accumulate heaps of save game files really fast? (I tend to quick save with F5 very frequently) Does is matter how many save files there are? Will it slow my game down eventually? I read some people had that problem. That's why I think I'd rather not have Steam connected to my save game files AT ALL, because I'd rather have the saves only in the Withcer2 folder and be able to delete all the old ones intermittently.
So... How do I fully and correctly make this change so Steam isn't doing Cloud saves and I don't run into any further problems there please?

Thanks

Mara, the easiest thing to do IMO is to convert it back to utilizing the witcher2 Mydocuments fold by following this thread --> http://en.thewitcher...m-cloud-saving/
NOTE: If you have the issue with your user file in Mydocuments converting cloudstorage=false to cloudstorage=true(Preventing the Witcher 2 from saving/reading from Mydocos) have a look through the second page of that guide. --> http://en.thewitcher...ng/page__st__20
I had this issue with it consistently changing the cloudstorage to =true. I had a play with the settings by following this:

Try doing this:
1) Launch the game. If Cloud Sync is on, turn it off, and if it's off, turn it on. Check your saves, if they're not there exit the game. Launch the game again and repeat. If that doesn't fix it try #2.
2) Launch the game. Turn Cloud Sync on. Exit the game. Go into Steam settings and turn Cloud Sync off. Launch the game. Check your saves, if that doesn't work: Launch the game. Turn Cloud Sync off. Go into Steam settings and turn Cloud Sync on. Launch the game. Check your saves, If that doesn't work try #3.
3) Launch the game. Turn Cloud Sync off. Go into Steam settings and turn Cloud Sync on. Launch the game. Turn Cloud Sync off. Check your saves, try the reverse if it doesn't work.
This all may seem pretty repetitive and similar and it may or may not work, but ultimately there's some kind of confusion in the software and turning it on and off in-game and in Steam in different combinations might eventually solve it. It's what worked for me. Hope somehow this works for you.
At one point I had it so in-game set that Cloud Sync was ON, but in Steam it said it was off, but my saves were showing from the normal directory meaning it was looking in the correct place. ›››
ONCE IT IS USING THE DOCUMENTS FOLDER, It will be easy to navigate to the save folder by:
Start> Documents> Witcher 2 > gamesaves
Once you are here, just delete/move the old saves to different folder if you wish. I found that having only a few saves in this folder will greatly reduce load lagg(I have a crappy laptop.)
Steam needs a warning with this game.
'DO NOT ENABLE STEAM CLOUD'

I think I will do that in the near future. Sick to death of this steam cloud business..
Same save format right? No need to start from scratch right?

But because of the former, I'm much more inclined to just get the GOG version, and get rid of the Steam version... I just don't want to mess that up either : P
1. Can anyone confirm if I'll be able to keep and use my most recent save games that were made while I was playing via Steam, if I delete the Steam version and use the GOG version instead?
1. a: If I can keep my save games, how do I do that? I'm worried that if I delete the Steam version it will remove all my old save game files too. Help please with this if anyone knows what to do.
2. If I run the GOG version, and Steam is also running, will Steam still mess me up? i.e.: Do I have to be super careful not to turn Steam on when I launch the GOG version of Witcher2?
3. Anything else I need to be aware of that I didn't think of if I want to get rid of the Steam and Cloud mess and just play this game using the GOG download?
Thanks : )

Mmm, I see. I thought you were getting them from the file system, not in-game. So yeah, you wouldn't have to worry about the stuff I mentioned. No worries.

Glad you got it sorted out. I think you did anyway?
If you use the GOG version I say copy the saves from The Witcher 2 folder in your My Documents folder and save them to the desktop (and put them back after you've installed GOG) but no I can't confirm they'll actually work with the GoG version.
