Wow, a reply, thanks so much - I'm old and not good at this chatline stuff !!
I've just arrived in jail at the start of Chapter 2. The quest says talk to the jailer Jethro.
When I click on the green icon to chat the little mouth moves, but Jethro doesnt speak - how the heck do I get out of the jail ?

Um, this isn't a chatline; it's a forum.

What? What platform are you playing the game on? I've never seen a "little mouth" in The Witcher.

I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.

I'm on my PC, Windows 7, playing the TW Enhanced edition. The mouse icon when over a npc character highlighted in green turns to a mouth. usually this kicks into a video clip - but at this point Jethro simply will not reply. Hope that helps, and sorry for the spam ..

Well, it's possible that you have a glitch, or it's possible that there's something you need to do before you talk to Jethro.

Have you done the following:

1. Had a fistfight with the muscleman and won?
2. Talked to Vincent afterwards?

If so, and clicking on Jethro doesn't start a conversation, then you've got a glitch. You could try restoring from a previous saved game and play up to that part again.

And this is a good time to remind everyone that even a game as wonderful as The Witcher crashes or becomes glitched fairly often. Save your game frequently! Like, really frequently. ;)

Thank you. However, all the characters, including the Muscleman in jail, are "blue" icon - and he wont fight me either, all he says is "relax".

Green characters are obviously important, but that doesn't mean that blue characters are UNimportant. You can -- AND SHOULD -- still talk to blue-ringed characters.

If you haven't had the fistfight with the Muscleman yet, then it's not yet time to talk to Jethro, and that's why he won't talk to you. Have you talked to the Elf in the corner? Talk to him, play some dice with him, and then things should progress.

I believe Corylea got the right answer: you must play dice with the elf before the quest will advance.

Shall during off hours exhibit his powers
To Madame Tussaud's wax-work.

on this note, I had this issue too back when the game was updated from patch 1.3 to 1.4 (Enhanced Edition) and I was using an older (pre 1.2 even) savegame, BUT I think this is not the case

(not for Steam) Enhanced Edition gives you "application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)" error? See here

I had exactly the same problem initially but went around to everyone and finally hit on the condemned elf(really starting to hate humans in this game and I am no leftie) and tried the dicegame and its numerous crashes. But the ONE game that finished passedn me through to the next bit)announcement, fistfight etc) so Corylea is right as usual : ) and many thanks to him for the help given to me and his mods xxx

Aw, thanks!

One thing, though -- I'm a woman. I wouldn't normally mention this, since I don't think my gender is all that important, but I keep hearing that women don't play games like this, and people will continue to think that unless the large number of women who ARE here point out that we're female. So, middle-aged woman here, been playing games like this for decades. ;)

I had that impression but did not wish to stick my nose in further.

Glad to hear that you're unstuck! Feel free to come back and ask questions again if you have any problems later on. You can also find some good information in The Witcher Wiki and The Gamepressure Guide to The Witcher.
