Change difficulty

Hello,

I can't change my difficulty level from DARK to something lower, the arrows around DARK are clickable but they do nothing.

I think the problem was this: I was playing with difficulty DARK then for the first time I've changed it to HARD, here there was a message warning me that some items could be lost forever, clicked Ok, made some auto-saves in HARD mode, reloaded an old save in DARK mode, playing one or two chapters from this DARK save and now I can't change it anymore.

Is it meant to be this way?

Thanks

No, it's supposed to allow you to change from Dark to a lower mode, but not back again. It does sound as though it got glitched somehow with the earlier event.

I'm guessing you're having problems with one particular quest, which is why you're wanting to drop down? If you're stuck with Dark, maybe we could just help you get through that quest. And if you're on PC there could be mods that will make it easier without actually changing mode.

Yes, I think in my save I have setted the flag "you have abandoned Dark mode and you can't go back", but in my case this flag is working in the opposite way.

Thanks for your kind help Dragonbird but I'm not stuck in a particular quest. It is difficult but using tactics, potions and signs you can do it. However Dark mode is very very time consuming, it is meant that way and I wanted to play that way (like a Demon's Souls ;)), but now I don't have much more time so I wanted at least see the ending.

Yes, I'm playing on a PC and I've already found some God mode mods, but that is too much cheating even for me. I've searched some save editor without luck, hopefully I can find the XML with the difficulty modes and swap Dark mode with Normal mode.

Thanks for your help.

You may have problems trying to edit it out, but one thing that may be worth trying is uploading your savegame to a hosting site and seeing if anyone else can switch it. If it's happened at registry level that might work. Also, it may be worth moving out your savegames, starting a new game, and then copying them back in. Again, it's harmless and there's a possibility that it will reset something.

Ok thanks, I'll try with a fresh install and a new game.

Just try the new game first - I'm not sure that a fresh install would work, and it's a lot of work for potentially no benefit. (The same applies to uploading your savegame, it's quicker than reinstalling as a way of showing if the problem is in your savegame or the install)

Unfortunately while I was trying to solve the problem I've installed the patch 3.1 and now all the texts are gone. It is a problem already seen on the forum and it seems reinstalling the game solved it. So a new install is needed anyway (and I'll try to clean the registry as well). Thanks for your concern :)
