It sounds like you've done what's necessary. You speak to Louis Merse, persuade him to let you have a look inside, then click on the box.

Check your journal. You've probably already dropped the letter in, in which case the quest is complete for now. (It continues in the next chapter).

thanks for the replay but no, the captians log/report is still in my inventory.......or does it stay in your inventory even though you say I have dropped it off?

I am totally perplexed..is it a bug?

It stays in your inventory, even though you dropped it in the postbox. (Maybe the postbox is a sort of early fax machine?)

If the journal says "Above all, however, our hero placed the parcel from the Petra Silie's captain in the box," you completed this part.

well i checked, nope, it says that geralt thought of the Royal Mail postbox so went and discovered that it contained all letters by Louis Merche so he got his hands on the contents of the box, then under the mini map it says to go and find the 2nd shipwreck up river of Ponter Valley....

so....have I sent the letters, as it appears I cannot send them...or I have...but they stay in my inventory...I am confused about this....there is not a way of sending them unless I have done it.....arrrgggghhhhhh!

If you were told to go find the second shipwreck, you are on course. Don't lose sleep over sticky quest items; this one isn't the first and won't be the last.

You won't find that shipwreck for some time.

So where exactly in chapter 2 are you supposed to find it? I explored everything in and around Vergen quite thoroughly, I thought, but nothing that reminded me of the ship wreck quest in chapte 1 ever came up.

Iorveth path: Past the troll with the cooking pot, keep going for some distance. You can go there anytime. If you do "Baltimore's Nightmare", you will be directed to the place.

Roche path: Can't go there until the mist is dispelled. Normally you will go there with Roche on the way to Vergen toward the end of the act.

I'm having the same problem. When I first played I opened the box and then shortly after I was able to put the mail in the box using the X button or I may have read Merse's letter after I opened the box and the two captain documents also and then I was told to put the mail in the box which I did. At any rate, I can't now. My journal does not say "Above all, however, our hero placed the parcel from the Petra Silie's captain in the box." It talks about what Merse wrote and to keep that in mind. The direction under the map does say to look for a second wreck. Is this a known bug that I can't mail now? Is there a needed order for it to work correctly?

Thanks.

If it says to look for a second wreck, you're OK. Are you in the second chapter yet?

Then if you've got the journal about "looking out for a second ship", just wait for the Second chapter. Guy posted earlier on where you can find the ship.

Okay. Does sending the letter do anything later in the game?

Oh I thought I was going crazy! I'm having the same conundrum. :P I'm not stressed; if it doesn't affect later quests then I guess it doesn't matter.

OK, after reading everything here...I still have the problem.

The last thing my journal says is this:

"...And who was the ranking royal officer in Flotsam? The answer was simple."

Now I am in Louis Merse's House, staring at the Royal box on the table. I spoke to him, got permission and opened the box to retrieve Merse's Report. I still have the Captains Log, and the Captain's Report. I have gotten to the point where my mini map still states to find the royal mail drop, and I cannot access the Royal Mail drop box anymore.

What am I doing wrong here?
