TW1 will not launch Win7SP1

01.05.2012 @ 02:37 #1

Just bought The Witcher Extended Edition Director's Cut from Steam and it will not launch. Opened a support ticket but I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out faster in a way that others will be able to find.

Symptoms: Open either launcher.exe or witcher.exe, runs for about 2 seconds, then the process disappears. No windows ever appear, no screen changes occur unless the resolution is changing from the low-rez compatibility mode windows executable option. This happens when I launch from Steam or by manually running the executables. The game is playable when run from within D'Jinni, but I want to be able to play the game without that particular middleman.

Steps taken:
-Reinstalled game
-Run as administrator/WinXP-SP3 Compatibility/Disable visual extras, tried with most combinations of these
--Steam, launcher, witcher executables all run as administrator
-Checked for crash dumps, none exist
-UAC has always been disabled on my PC, but confirmed that it is
-Ritually sacrificed Sour Patch Kids candy to my stomach with a liter of mountain dew
-Actually did some homework - it's definitely not my computer punishing me for being a procrastinator

Specs:
Win7SP1-32bit
4GB RAM
Core 2 Duo OC'd @ 3.00GHz (stable, can run any other game)
nVidia GTS 250 - DirectX 11

Soluto doesn't detect a crash. As an added step, I checked by visual c++ installations and found I had 3 2005's. Uninstalled them and installed the latest VC 2005 SP1 to make sure that's not the issue. Also, no event logs exist for The Witcher.

Is it possible steam is repeatedly giving me two bad executables (launcher.exe and witcher.exe)?

Do the launcher and witcher exe`s have a version number when hovering the mouse over them also a size ?
Are you overclocking your video card ?

Don`t really know but i wouldn`t think that Sour Patch Kids and Mountain Dew would go over very well together .

Launcher.exe - File version 1.0.0.83 -- Product Version 1.4.5.1280 -- Size 1.13MB
Witcher.exe - File version 1.5.0.1304 -- Product Version 1.5.0.01304 -- Size 9.75MB

Note that I have tried to run the program from both files, both crash in the same manner.

My video card has a factory overclock that has not caused problems for any other game, ranging from Star Wars Dark Forces to TES V: Skyrim to Fallout: New Vegas.

They don't go that well together, but sour patch kids and mountain dew were all I had with me at the time :P

I have the disc version and the launcher exe is the same but witcher exe is 9.42 MB but the version is the same

For reference the stock clocks for the GTS250 should be . If running a small overclock shouldn`t see anything out of the ordinary but huge overclocks can definitely be the cause

Yeah, the stock OC is most likely not the cause - too small to cause a problem. Which leaves me out of ideas

odd, i have the OG DVD witcher from '08, and i installed it and the EE upgrades, it runs perfectly fine windows 7 &
SP 1.

sounds like a problem with W7 SP1 & steam.

do other steam games run with your set up or just not the witcher?

Have you tried running in windowed mode ?

Witcher is the only one that doesn't run and windowed mode doesn't help. At this point, I'm considering just reinstalling windows so I can switch from 32-bit to 64-bit so I can use all 4GB of my RAM. I've been looking for an extra reason to do it anyway...

The one thing that really sticks out to me is that I can run the game from D'Jinni, but not from the regular executable. Not even launcher.exe works.
