OK, I just wanted to test the old version with the 2.0 patch and now EE is doing a forced install. This means when you install TW2 on the PC, you cannot even play the game until the EE patch is downloaded or patch the game with 2.0.

Honestly, this should be optional because to activate the game you are forced to download the EE after, or the game will go into a loop and start again with activation each time.

WTF CDPR?

Just don't use launcher and launch game using witcher2.exe. It's in 'bin' folder.

But I agree. CDPR should make automatic updates optional.
If you see a grammar mistake in my post, then I don't mind if you send me a notice about it via PM. I always want to improve my English grammar.

Simply skipping the launcher should work. Start the game with The Witcher 2\bin\witcher2.exe instead, and you should be brought directly into the game, bypassing the launcher.

Doesn't work, the bin file says "Please use the launcher to activate the game". They've completely locked us out for the EE.

Edit: Great now my previously working saved EE patch is saying the files are corrupt again. Monumental fuckup by CDPR with EE on the PC, it really is.

If you still want 2.0, install the game and cancel out of the registration. Then install 1.35 and 2.0 next. Don't run the launcher at any point, just the configurator.exe, set everything up and then run the game via witcher2.exe

Don't you get an option to either accept or reject automatic updates? I remember running TW2 2.1 on the 17th (before I finished downloading TW2 EE from GOG) and I was able to *cancel* the download of the EE patch. Maybe it doesn't work anymore...

PC does not equal Windows. Personal computers run many different operating systems, like GNU/Linux and, why not, Windows. PC games should be available for all major platforms. Let's not be handcuffed and tied to one vendor. Utilize standard, cross-platform technologies!

No option, cancelling the update just loops the install back to the activation.

You don't need to activate the game at all. As I said, cancel the activation, then apply 1.35 and 2.0.

Maybe you could write what steps you're actually taking, or post screenshots?

Doesn't matter now anyway, I'm not installing it again just to do some tests.

your making it out to e harder than it really is, i got from fresh install to 2.0 without any issues at all.

Install the game, don't use launcher install 1.35 and then 2.0, and just launch wicher2.exe

That doesn't work because you cannot skip the activation and it downloads the EE downloader now. CDPR have stopped us from using the old versions of the game.

This is what happens when the witcher2.exe is launched. Posted Image

You cannot play the game until you have activated and downloaded the EE update.

How to manually patch the game:
1. get the patches first and foremost doesn`t matter in what order just as long as you have them all
2. disconnect from the internet
3. install the game from the DVDs
4. close the launcher or cd-key registration
5. install Patch 0-1.35 ( http://thewitcher.com/patch1-35/ )
6. install Patch 2.0 ( http://wpc.4d7d.edge...atch2_0_INT.exe )
7. there used to be a Patch 2.1 but it's now obsolete, so we don't install it
8. test game by running witcher2.exe AND NOT THE LAUNCHER ( starting the Launcher will force the autoupdate to Enhanced Edition ~12-15Gb to download if online, be careful )
9. install the Enhanced Edition from the manually downloaded and checked files: http://en.thewitcher...049#entry806049
10. install Patch 3.1 ( http://wpc.4d7d.edge...EE_Patch3.1.exe )
11. install Patch 3.2 ( http://wpc.4d7d.edge...EE_Patch3.2.exe )
12. retry the game
13. IF you get the error "application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)" then get the hotfix: http://en.thewitcher.com/dotnet/
14. retry again
15. drink a cold one for getting it working ;)
15. reconnect to the internet

/LE: updated to 3.2

Despite that EE should be optional, they shouldn't be forcing people to download over 10Gb. The game should have stayed as it was with the EE optional.

I am having the exact same problem, been trying to get TW2 to work again all day now with no success. It's starting to wear down on my patience. I'll elaborate on what I've tried so far.

Initially I was just happy EE was out and wanted to install it. It gave me some errors on corrupt files and after that the launcher stopped working completely (I consistently got a 'the witcher 2 launcher has stopped working' error'). Also trying to bypass the launcher by using witcher2.exe directly didn't work as it gave me that 'please use the launcher' pop-up.

I figured if there really were corrupt files I'd do a fresh install from my original Assassin of Kings dvd's. I deinstalled the game, ran CCleaner and deleted any files in My Documents to make sure everything was removed. After installing (and registering my cd-key) it tried auto-updating the game (downloading 10 GB again). After this was done, I got the exact same error on corrupted files on my existing installation, even though I had done a fresh install.

So I came here, read various tips I could try including shutting down UAC and AV (I even deinstalled this to make double sure) and running everything as administrator just in case. I also read that I could skip the registration of my cd-key and install the patches (as administrator) manually, so I tried this without anti-virus installed, and UAC turned completely off. For some reason the patches seemed to fail working (I tried 1.0 -> 1.35, 1.35 -> 2.0 and the EE patch of 10+ GB) returning corruption errors and it aborted installation. But whenever this was done the launcher simply stopped working. Also even with a fresh install from the original disks I couldn't bypass the launcher as again I got the 'please use the launcher' pop-up. Also, with a fresh install and trying to bypass the registration just to play the game, that same registration prompt just kept popping up.

With all the corruption errors I figured my HDD may have been the cause, so I did several things to check this (which costed me half the day). To my surprise the returned results were that my HDD was in perfect condition and that no sections had been damaged or had any errors in them at all. Normally I would be happy, but in this case I had kinda hoped it would have been the cause of my problems so that I at least knew how to fix it.

So now I am a bit at a wits' end, I have tried about everything I read on here and the situation of the OP is exactly the same as mine. I have no tried reinstalling this game about 6 times today already under different situation and nothing is working. The funny thing is that I used to play this game on this exact same PC when it was originally released so I don't know why a truly fresh install isn't working either.

I hope someone can help out the OP and me, because I was really looking forward to play this game again and I have no idea why it isn't working anymore. :(

Edit: is it possible you can post the link to patch 0 on here WrATH72? Didn't see your reply until after I posted and re-read the thread. Many thanks in advance already.

I am reading this is working on German, Switzerland, and Austrian version. I take it since you got it to work it doesn't matter that I have an English version of the game? (From the Netherlands here)

I've had same problems before

The problem is a fresh install forces an EE patch and cannot run unless patched. The solution is to not run the game and patch it to 1.35 (the hotfix) and then to 2.0. After that, you can use the launcher, not download the EE patch, and still be able to launch the game. You can also use the EE downloader, then run the launcher again, declining EE patching this time, and launch the game.
