It IS possible to keep Berengar alive, but it's pretty clear that the developers expected him to be dead at the end of that fight. After it's over, he has no post-fight conversation; he only says the things he said BEFORE the fight (and that were only relevant before the fight). And he doesn't go anywhere or do anything; he just stands there. It's pretty clear that he's supposed to die.

damn im already on the last boss in the epilogue and don't have saves that back.
