Foliage pop in??
17.04.2012 @ 07:27 #1
Just downloaded the enhanced edition and went to load some saves and there is horrible foliage pop in. Like the foliage instantly lights up in front of me. Not the bushes and such but the grass.
Is this normal? I have almost everything maxed out with great fps and I don't remember this happening in my first playthrough. Any clues, anyone?

It's normal and they never fixed their engine. Bad LOD has always been in Witcher 2, it's the worst I've seen in a game where the grass and details switch from low quality to high quality LOD in front of you.
I don't think it will be fixed unless they do some PC specific optimisations. This happened in Gothic 4 but it was fixed in a patch where they added some mulicore optimisation that I think wasn't working right before the patch.

Many thanks for they reply.
Just to be sure we are on the same page, this is what I'm referring to. Is it the same thing you are talking about?

Hmm, it's not as bad as that. What I see is mainly a low quality version of the grass and then the high quality version is switched to in front of you. Also it seems the SSAO shadowing draws under the foliage very near.

In user.ini, in your document dir (on win7 use the search bar on the start menu), go find this:
FoliageDistanceScale=
and be sure the value is set on 1.0
Maybe you want to look at this post for you http://forum.noteboo...ues-solved.html

No, nothing. I copy pasted the ultra+ profile and have no problem with my fps.
But the pop in continues... This doesn't seem easy to fix... Please, any more advice or tips?

Changing the ini doesn't do anything in that regard and anything over 1.0 doesn't improve the LOD distance. I assume you have "LOD Distance" set to far? Other than that it could be some ATI/AMD issue or driver issue because I don't get popup like that on my NVIDIA GTX560 Ti 2GB.

I started again after the EE update so I cannot test with the grass like that. Maybe try and find the problem in the castle siege at the start?

I tried, starting a new game, but there is no foliage like that in the beginning...
Any other tips, anyone? Maybe a mod? This is a serious problem that I didn't have before.

You'll have to wait until I get to Flotsam then so I can see myself.

It certainly could be old save related but other than what I said, I don't know.

That's exactly it! I imagine this is an old save?
No tinkering has produced results, so could it be save game compatible, as I say above?
Are you using an ATI card?

Yes, HD 5870 in CF. I don't remember having this problem when I first played the game, in fact I was astounded by its graphics.

I really hope I'm not going to see that otherwise it's a downgrade in the engine, possibly for performance.
