I can recommend the anthologies that George R. R. Martin has edited. They're a good way to discover new authors. The post on the Dresden Files reminded me, because that author has a story in Songs of Love and Death. There is also Warriors, which is where I discovered Cecelia Holland, whose books I've been devouring the past year or so.

What I'm now reading (or finally have started to read) is The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli. I have continuously been recommended to read it (along with Art of War) and finally decided to take my time and read them.

And I have as well the A Song of Ice and Fire that needs to be finished. They are currently gathering dust in the shelf, since I so clumsily forgot the second book (A Clash of Kings) at my summer cottage and it will take quite some time to reach it.

I picked up The Last Wish today but am currently reading The Night Eternal. It's pretty good.

The nail-biting vampire thriller from the world-famous director of Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy......

It's compelling stuff alright, but I'm already kind of regretting not starting with one of the earlier books.

Let me know what you think of it/them. I have intended to read both for many years, but have never gotten to it.

Finished Horus Rising and also False Gods, the second novel in the Horus Heresy series. And it is glorious. I absolutely recommend everyone (even non War40k fans) to check the books out. It describes the history of the 40k Universe and how Chaos come to be what it is today. The novels are bloody fantastic.

Now, onto the next novel!

Fortunetly the Horus Rising releasing soon in Hungary. The bigger good news it will be translated, and this is one of the most excited series. I hope they will be publish some Dark Angels novels too.

I've bought it yesterday night and I've already read it: a whole year to translate it, just few hours to read it :P

They translated 'contempt' to 'war'? Is there some more meaning to 'guerra' or did they.... take their freedom in translating? ???

Or can the Polish 'pogardy' be tranlated to both 'contempt' and 'war'? :hmmm:

Nope it can't, but it's the italian way, book and movie titles are translated/adapted quite liberally, depending on what distributors think will make a greater impression on the public. ;)/> Btw, The Last Wish was translated into Il guardiano degli innocenti, The guardian of the meek

Like yayodeanno has said, in Italy titles are changed very often: for example, To Kill a Mockingbird became Il Buio Oltre la Siepe ("The Dark Past the Hedge"). As you can see, the meaning is completly different, although it has anyway a meaning that suits the book decently (I still prefer original titles :) )

I like the cover art! Is that Ciri?

I'm reading this book by a Cambridge prof. Very readable and enjoyable thus far.

Just finished "Harbor" by John Ajvide Lindqvist. He wrote "Let The Right One In", which is one of the better vampire novels I've read-the movie versions were pretty good as well. "Harbor" is different, has more of a sense of dread and lurking, unknowable evil. Good stuff.

Also reading "Superman, a History" by Larry Tye. Very entertaining book, it explores the history of the character in various media, the backstory of his creators, why he resonates with people all over the world. I'm not the biggest fan (Marvel hooked me as a kid) but I do have a soft spot for the big guy.

Following on from Razorfists idiotic attack on Sapkowski's validity as an author i've decided to re-read a few of my Moorcock collection. Started with my favourite character, the tortured Vadhagh (elven) prince Corum Jhaelan Irsei. Got to say the Knight of Swords is one hell of a book, has a certain hallucinogenic poetic feeling running through its narrative, and is consistently original and recklessly imaginative.

Highly recommended, have a gander at the opening stanza:

In those days there were oceans of light and cities in the skies and wild flying beasts of bronze. There were herds of crimson cattle that roared and were taller than castles. There were shrill, viridian things that haunted bleak rivers. It was a time of gods, manifesting themselves upon our world in all her aspects; a time of giants who walked on water; of mindless sprites and misshapen creatures who could be summoned by an ill-considered thought but driven away only on pain of some fearful sacrifice; of magics, phantasms, unstable nature, impossible events, insane paradoxes, dreams come true, dreams gone awry, of nightmares assuming reality.
I was once asked by a journalist what my thoughts were on the modern world slipping into ignorance and apathy, I told him, "I don't know and I don't fucking care!"

And god damn it is fantastic. Easily my favorite book in the series so far. Alpha Legion kicks so much ass I cannot even put it into words. They are officially my favorite Space Marine Legion now. Although one has to wonder what would happen if
