One of the few mandatory books in high school that I bothered to read. The short story in which he describes the bridge's "history" is so haunting.

After having finished my marathon of Harry Potter movies with family, I've decided I want to re-read the books and pay closer attention.

I know it will annoy the shit out of me with the extremely heavy author bias against Slytherin, a house I'd identify with (and was sorted in, in pottermore). But upon watching the movies in a more attentive way, I've come to see Dumbledore as my favorite character, and as the magnificent bastard of the series (Voldie is nothing compared to him). Apparently the books shows this much better than the movies, so. I suppose it merits a read.

I'm genuinely surprised you're a Harry Potter fan KOP.

I wouldn't say I'm a devoted fan perse, even as a kid, the "Gryffindors are great - Slytherin are stupid evil" annoyed me tremendously. I think JKR is a good writer but she has extreme author bias that prevents her, imo, from being great.

That said, there are a number of good things in the series, and great characters (too bad 99% of them are not in Slytherin). And at the end of the day, it was the machinations and manipulations of a machiavellian mind that defeated Voldemort, with Harry only being an instrument.

Yes, yes, yes! I listen to a lot of audiobooks while painting, I don't see how it's any different... it's just someone else reading a book to you :] Actually, I enjoyed an audiobook/radio-play of We Can Remember It For You Wholesale more than the 'actual' story (now google tells me it's the story of Total Recall? The more you know!) A good narrator can make the experience all the more magical, although they CAN be hit-or-miss. ›››

The main reason I prefer audiobooks is that I'm not a native english speaker and its easier for me to just close my eyes and listen than to read english from my screen. Even though Black Library audiobooks are quite expensive for my taste, I do believe that atleast some of them are worth it and I'm also pleased with BL's choice of narrators - Gareth Armstrong, Jonathan Keeble and Toby Longworth are the best.
Hope. The cruellest poison.

Reading this right now. Almost finished, its a decent story with a good amount of action, but its quite stereotypical, nothing really new. But then again, after A Song of Ice and Fire, almost all other fantasy feels that way.

Talking about that, I'm halfway through book four now. Still divert my eyes from anywhere just at the sight of a hint of people talking about the books :D

You are doing a very good thing. I spoiled myself with Reddit. /r/asoiaf has so many theories that have so much proof that I feel like I already know the big reveal. Oh well, I will hopefully forget it before Winds of Winter comes out.

You're brave. I own all of the books, but I haven't read them in years. Frankly, I'm scared of reading them as an adult and being disappointed. #6 and #7 were boring for the most part (although they had some of the best stuff, too). I agree about Dumbledore, #7 was worth it solely for all the ~reveals~ about him.

Pottermore put me into Ravenclaw, a choice I actually agree with, but it's sad how the other two houses don't get mentioned much.

@Lubo
Yeah, audiobooks are great practice ("Oh, so that's how you pronounce that!"). I can't focus on them unless I'm doing something else (drawing/painting), though, my mind wanders off too easily otherwise.

I'm reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens at the moment. Great satire, some memorable characters, though my English is sometimes pushed to its limits... and I find it difficult to keep track of all the characters, which disappear for fifty or a hundred pages and then suddenly reappear again and it turns out they're quite important to the story....

Finished Empire in Chaos, it was a standard Warhammer fantasy novel. Nothing special or groundbreaking, just a simple story with quite a lot of action. The end was terrible though and it needed more closure. It was also quite predictable. Overall, a decent book but you can get better. (I should not complain though, because it was a gift).

Now onto the "sequel", Dark Storm Gathering.

I'm really suprised about this book. I thought it is a cheap, boring videogame-book. But this is isn't. I like it. I'm am new in the Warhammer 40k universe, this is my second novel, but I'm planning to buy more.

I like The Hunger Games trilogy and the final book, Mockingjay, is the best in my opinion, though I do wish there was less teenage romance crap and more focus on the political side of Panem and the rebellion.

Regardless of the teenage romance crap, I still like the trilogy so far.

Finished Dark Storm Gathering. Overall a good book. Much better than Empire in Chaos. But its still stereotypical fantasy.

I did start reading Horus Heresy though, Horus Rising to be exact. Only 5 chapters in but I am already hooked. I love the style in which the author writes and all the personal, universal but also political elements mixed in. Looking forward to reading the first 15 books that are at my disposal. Also the books are absolutely beautiful. Very simple but the bronze lines and letters are very stylish.
