Finally got mine to work. For some reason I missed the offending toolbar in my uninstall programs list. So instead I just started to look through my program files folder and spotted it in seconds. Did a thorough uninstall and restarted my PC. The game started right up. My thanks to Tommy, Guy, and any other members who have pitched in on this insidious little issue. We can all look back and laugh about it now. Kind of.

It was the ilivid toolbar btw. ›››

No problems here with downloading or installing EE...it's just gone back to the same problem I had with original Witcher 2 install off disc: Click icon, the menu comes up on screen, click on launch game, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, then the menu comes up again. I finally got it working somehow but have forgotten.

I also found and uninstalled the iLivid toolbar; no luck.

My problem is a bit similiar. The launcher opens, I click on "Launch game", the launcher closes, the wolf head appears, nothing happens, the wolf head disappears and the launcher opens again. If I click "Launch game" again, the launcher closes and the wolf head stays indefinitely without anything happening.
There is no error message or error log. I reinstalled and completely deinstalled .NET Framework several times now (I also removed the other versions of .NET Framework before installing the game again), I reinstalled the game on different drives, I've searched for the toolbars and other stuff, but didn't found anything, I tried to start the game after after a clean boot, nothing worked.

I absolutely had no problem playing and installing the Witcher 2 after it was released and didn't change my system (only updated the graphic drivers). I don't know, what I still can do about it.

if witcher2.exe crashes try: Soluto -> reboot -> soluto starts -> start game, game crash -> soluto -> crashes -> witcher2 -> advanced -> info ....copy info... www.pastebin.com -> new paste -> post link here
TW2 manual install guide from the DVDs? See my post here

TW2 Enhanced Edition Patch install errors? See my post

(not for Steam) Enhanced Edition gives you "application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)" error? See here

Try bypassing the launcher and starting your game directly from the witcher2.exe file.
Want to be IN a computer game? I'm making one, and I want a picture of you! See here for details.

I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.

I've also made a bunch of mods that fix bugs, kill annoyances or tweak gameplay; you can get those at the Witcher Nexus.

Soluto doesn't seem to spot the 142 crash.

I just read on German Amazon that someone with the 142 error removed malware and spyware from his system with a tool called "Hijack This!", which lead to the game running without problems.
My assumption: Some malware might be utilizing backdoors in .NET Framework which don't ork properly in .NET 4. This could lead to problems with other programs using .NET 4.

Wow... This is really amazing. This bug was introduced in V2.1 and is still present! I am totally dumbfounded by this turn of events. The developer releases a 10gb+ patch that doesn't even address the issues of a commonly experienced game crushing bug that happens as soon as you attempt to launch the game - how does this happen? I understand that it's 3rd party software that's causing the issue; but nonetheless, remember, the net result, CDPR, is that it's YOUR game that isn't working.

I've actually been attempting to get 'The Witcher 2' V2.1 working without success for about 2 months now due to this bug. I had to roll back to the original out of the box V2 in order to get it running (Thank God for pressed copies of games.) and simply ignore patch V2.1. I was hoping that the update to the Enhanced Edition would have resolved this issue but no, apparently not.

Oh well, is there a third party 'hot fix' for this game available yet? I really find it quite odd that a crack may be required for a game that has no DRM on it in order to get it to work. Such irony!

Anyway, to you, Tommy. You're doing a fantastic job. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. Thank you for all your effort in trying to get everyone up and running passed this piece of nonsense which really should have been resolved in this patch. Keep up the great work for assisting people with a problem that should've been fixed by now. You deserve to be on CDPR's payroll and receive recompense for being the man up front and dealing with this nonsense.

For some reason the flash uploader isn't working in Firefox 11 so I'll upload the pics of my programs list to an image host instead.

I'm getting the same 0xc0000142 error as everyone else here. I'm linking the images of my programs list as showing the images on the forum itself would cause horizontal scrolling which is undesirable to all concerned.

I see you have Virtu installed with the new update . I don`t know if the new update allows it to function with Witcher 2 but you could try uninstalling it and then try Witcher 2 .

I also haven`t used the Xfire programs either which would be another consideration to disable or uninstall the toolbar first and the Xfire program second .

how do i find these tool bars you are talking about?

*Tommy* said:

While these fixes were first for the 2.1 patch they also work for the TW2EE patch

After working with a member by the name of Darius Naglo (permission given to use name) recently who was getting the 142 error with Steam version of Witcher 2 and finally after 2 days of updating software and outdated drivers and removing unneeded software to no avail we finally stumbled on the culprit...Browser Toolbars or in his case the Jzip toolbar .
After further searching and installing toolbars of various vendors i`ve found 3 that will cause this error or condition . Are there others ? I`m quite sure there are but i neither have the time nor energy to try every toolbar out there . I have listed 3 that i know to be causing the issue . I know the Yahoo and Google toolbars to be ok with no ill effects from either .

Jzip toolbar
Wincore Media bar
BearShare software
ILivid toolbar
searchqu toolbar - This program is deceivingly listed as Windows searchqu toolbar . It is NOT a Windows program but a program made for Windows
Media bar - usually comes as part of a software package deal from imesh or Bandoo media and several other vendors .

other possibles are

Conduit Engine
ijji(IJJI) toolbar
any torrent toolbar

For now though i will be busy getting rid of all the damn spyware and adware that these so called helpers have managed to let in on my system .

Also it may be worth checking the windows update log for any failed updates for the simple reason that if a windows update fails for any reason then there is something that`s not right with the OS at the start and not correcting it can only lead to further complications later on .

Another possible solution is to synchronize internet time as suggested by another user (SpamIrwin) . To synchronize time click Start>Control Panel>Date and Time then click the tab Internet Time then click the Change Settings box and then select Update Now . Once synchronized retry game .

OF NOTE : Since the issue with Kaspersky2011 causing issues with witcher 2 i started searching for 2012 versions of antivirus programs , the more common ones are listed below with extra security if you are so inclined for free trials .

ADDITIONAL STEPS THAT USERS CAN DO - added on Jan 7 2012

Q : Do i have to uninstall Lucid products like Virtu , LucidLogix , or HydraLogix ?
A : No . You can simply rename a single file namely this one appinit_dll.dll before playing Witcher 2 and after you`re done with Witcher 2 then rename it back to what it was originally with full functionality to the program(s) restored . But if you do not use these programs and have no intention to then it can be uninstalled with no side effects to your computer or games .

Q : Do i need to uninstall Adobe Acrobat Extended Pro ?
A : No . It`s enough to rename or remove this file Acaptuser32.dll before playing Witcher 2 . After you`re done then either rename or move it back to the original folder and full functionality will be restored to Adobe Acrobat Extended Pro .

Q : After uninstalling the searchqu toolbar i notice i still have the searchqu folder and that it cannot be deleted .
A : To delete entirely the searchqu folder after uninstalling the toolbar right click the searchqu folder and select rename . Then rename the folder to Searchqu.OLD and restart computer and when the computer reboots then navigate to the folder again and right click>delete and the folder and it`s contents will cease to exist .

Adobe's new patch for Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.
(courtesy of Sygnus21)
For those that had to rename the file: Acaptuser32.dll to Acaptuser32.dll.bak (C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\ and/or C:\WINDOWS\System32\) to get Witcher 2 to run be aware that an update was just released by Adobe a day ago which repairs the file back to: Acaptuser32.dll.

FOR STEAM ONLY

Q: Can i revert to 2.0 version of the game because 2.1 breaks the game for me ?
A : I believe it can be done yes . Also because this is not an OFFICIAL release i must be forthright in what it will do and expectations .
(1) This is a VERY UNOFFICIAL workaround and is not sanctioned or approved by CD Projekt Red
(2) It WILL break the compatibility with Steam IE: NO autopatching , NO Steam overlay , and NO achievements
(3) It will be done at the user`s risk only and absolutely no one can be held responsible but the user themself .

Using the Critical Rebuild Patch found HERE should revert the game to 2.0 note that it is a 4 GB file . Also note that after installation of this patch if you run a file verification through Steam it will download the entire game again so with this patch these changes are fully reversible . After installation of the patch you should also be able to run Witcher 2 from the Witcher2exe found in the installation directory which if default should be
C:\ Program Files or Program Files(X86)\Steam\steamapps\common\witcher 2\bin . ›››

Most would be found through Control Panel>Programs and Features -> Vista and 7
Control Panel>add remove programs -> XP

Search engines can be found usually in the respective browser in tools or options .
Still can`t find anything ? feel free to take screenshots of all installed programs and email to me .
