I've decided to go with the elf and rescue the barge prisoners, which will probably mean leaving for the next town and Act II in the barge. I'm reading ahead in the game's Guide and it looks like with this choice that action in Flotsam with Roche isn't going to happen. And I guess that means Geralt doesn't get to open up the official mail box in the Commanders house??

Please confirm this--that you can't do both and then go off in the barge with the elves??

I note that the quest, "At A Crossroads: Vernon Roche", is 'red-X' while its counter has a 'green-check'?

Confirmed - you can't do both. The status of the two quests in your journal is also as it should be.

No, you can't read that mailbox if you make this decision, but don't be over-concerned about that. Just make sure that Mystic River is marked complete in your journal.

Great. I'm just starting Act II now. Mystic River closed in Act I along with 17 other side quests and numerous main quests...with the same 2 main quests left open in Act I as the Prologue. BTW, I know from the Game Guide that Mystic River gets revisited in Act II and III--just the quest name--no detail yet.
