I have a very capable system, including a quad-core processor and an ATI HD 5800 card with 1 GB of memory. I just finished playing Crysis 2 at maximum settings with no issues. In fact, almost every game I play, I can comfortably get either High or Very High settings.

Not so with the Witcher 2, and it seems even worse after 1.3.

The game runs great on the "Low" options. Still an occasional hiccup, but mostly smooth. Unfortunately, the graphics are less than great this way, and to have to run on "Low" just seems ridiculous with the hardware I have. Even the "Medium" settings result in ridiculous lag and stuttering that honestly make the game unplayable for me. I'm on the latest ATI driver, of course, 11.7, but am very frustrated with the performance, especially after 3 patches.

Any other ATI users having issues like this? I'd love to know if this is a compatibility problem with the game's engine and ATI's current drivers or if there's some hardware conflict that's degrading performance on my system.

As I said, no other problems on other high-end games whatsoever. I know I have the horsepower to run this game at a high level, at least theoretically.

Thanks for any insight.

get Speccy (Speccy) and do tell us what's on the summary page

also, get Fraps and see what framerate you get in game on either LOW, MED, HIGH

FRAPS eats some resources when it's activated in games, try MSI Afterburner and enable on the options the framerate(check that) and then enable it on OSD. MSI Afterburner eats minimum resources.

LE: The game stutters a little even on nvidia cards, so...

You could try to overclock the card, and to enable vertical sync in the driver + triple buffering.

all the programs eat resources, Fraps -is- easier to set up ( see your picture if you don't get my point :P ) 'cause 1fps loss is not the problem

Few click that, few clicks there, and no problems, he also can overclock the card, and test the performance after the overclock, and so on.. ( i don't work for msi :))) )

I'm running with Ati radeon HD 6770 1GB, high graphics, stays atleast 30 fps so its buttery smooth, gets laggy if i even try the highest graphics. Could be that this problem exists and maybe I could run game abit higher without the patches etc, cant really tell cause got the game 5 days ago..

You need more ram, and it's DDR2. I think this is a possible issue regarding slow downs in Witcher 2, for you.

And if you have proper cooling for you cpu, you could try to overclock it at least to 3.3ghz, but be aware that your cpu is on 65nm, may emanate some heat due to 65nm technology architecture. I think for 3.3ghz 1.26 voltage is just fine.

Do you think I could run the maxed graphics or is it too much for the Graphic card?

It's the HD 6790 ? Or the HD 6770, HD 6750 ?

Well this cards are ok, but i don't think you could maxed you with solid 60 fps.
Also, the cpu is very good, if you have a aftermarket cooling you could try to put the cpu on 4ghz only by modifying the multiplier in the BIOS, that cpu can easily go to 4ghz.

@calinRO: chill bro' ( DDR2, 65nm ) those are -not- issues ATM
and read Mordecei posts again, HD6770

@Mordecei: your video card is just a rebranded HD5770. so you should be fine on High ( but no Antialias, no Ubersampling, no CutsceneDOF, no cinematic DOF, no Motion blur, no ingame DOF )

All good suggestions, but the fact remains that I'm not having these issues on any other "cutting edge" games. Crysis 2 ran at high settings just fine, Call of Duty Black Ops, Mass Effect 2, etc., all at high settings, lots of antialiasing, etc., totally smooth frame rates. Just don't get why the Witcher 2 is giving me different results, especially at everything but "Low" settings.

Btw, once I've been in an area for awhile, the frame rate dramatically improves with higher settings. It's almost like the game is taking time to load everything, and once it does (3 minutes or so), it's OK. Problem is, soon as I hit a new area, the same stop and start stuff happens again.

HI You didn't say which processor you were running. Although it is a Quad core, there is a possibility that it is choking the Video card. I was running a 5770 on Ultra and had no problems, but also running a Core i7 960. I said was, I just recent upgraded to an Nvidia GTX 560ti. Bottom line is, people upgrade cards and don not consider the fact they may not have enough processor to support it. Not saying that is your issue, but just a possibilty.
Cooler Master 912 HAF case, ASUS P8Z68-VPro motherboard, Intel Core i7 2600k Processor ( 3.4 Ghz OC'd to 4.4 Ghz ), Gelid Tranquillo CPU cooler, EVGA Nvidia GTX 680 Super Clocked Signature 2Gb GDDR RAM Video Card, LiteOn Optical drive, 8 Gb GSkill Ripjaws series X 1600 Mhz Ram,Samsung Series 830 256 Gb SSD, WD 1TB SATA III Hdd ( primary ), WD 1TB SATA II Hdd ( secondary ), Corsair AX850 PSU, running Windows 7 Home Premuim.

Hi, It's an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 @ 2.66GHz. Definitely a few years old, but still handles every other game fine. Again, if this was a major problem, wouldn't I see the performance decrease in the majority of new games I play? The Witcher 2 is the only one giving me problems. I'm fine with not getting "Ultra" settings, but "Low" just seems way off.

In playing around with the settings more, it seems clear to me that the "texture downscaling" box is one of the main culprits in my performance issues.

If I have it set to "high," things run smoothly, but when I set it to "None," that's when all the stuttering and stopping happens.

It doesn't seem to be a frame rate issue really. For example, even with the "None" setting, I was running around in the woods and hitting about 50 fps. Then, suddenly I met an NPC who started talking to me, and the entire game slowed to a crawl. After a couple minutes, it recovered, and I was getting 50 fps again in the same area. Then, as I'd run further out into the woods, the picture would literally freeze for a good 10 seconds, then, presto, immediately back to 45-50 fps.

Also, with the "None" setting for texture downscaling, the game takes forever to shut down and slows my system down for a good minute or so even after the game itself has been closed. When that setting is set to "high," it closes quickly and doesn't affect my system performance at all afterwards.

My texture memory size setting doesn't seem to help in this regard at all.

I'm using two ATI Radeon HD 5670s in Crossfire on Medium settings just fine, so your issue seems odd to me, i hope you get it fixed. My performance however is less than desirable and I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 arriving at my doorstep tomorrow, I hope then to be able to admire Triss Merigold in her full beauty during the game's prologue. I'm trying so hard not to play it as I've almost beat the Witcher 1 and want to finish that first.

But otherwise no problems with my setup here.

Hmm, my machine has a lower spec CPU but a higher spec GPU (HD6970) and I am having no issues with 50fps, no stuttering etc. Have folowed the guideance in prior dev post on setting graphics values.
