I prefer the first one. I had no issues with the original game's combat, liked the more personal (and longer) story, the game had better locations (Kaer Morhen, Vizima, Murky Waters) and better immersion and (darker) atmosphere.

I still love the second one. The engine is phenomenal, the open story progression is great, the game has more challenge and the cutscenes are very impressive. Only thing that's really wrong with it in my opinion is the horrid UI and map design and I really disliked the new flashback art. Way too "comic book" like..

An immersion breaker for me.

So in a nutshell The Witcher 2 is perhaps the "better game" but The Witcher 1 is still the better experience. IMO.

So, share your opinions as well! :)

Both are definitely equally great but there is one thing missing in TW2.

Those crypts that send the chills down my spine, because of their unique atmosphere, in TW1, with all their inhabitants too. Where are the Vampires, Ghouls and all their families?

Also, all the small animals we can see in TW1. Where are the dogs, geese, birds? All we have left are crows? heh

I love both, but I love The Witcher 2 more. I do agree though that the flashback cutscenes were done better in TW1.

Yes. The second game lacks in terms of atmosphere, monster variety and immersion.

Personally, I thought the difference in atmosphere between the two games reflects the difference of "mindset" or "focus" of each game / story.

Imo, TW2 was a much more "human" and political story, which is outside Geralt's comfort zone, so its atmosphere reflected that. TW1 was more "traditional" for the lack of a better word and more focused on the Witcher part of Geralt, aka as a monster slayer, so its atmosphere reflected that.

That said, I do miss monster variety and I agree that the Outskirts at night for instance, was spooky, I feeling I never really felt in TW2 (I guess the forests of Flotsam at night were a bit spooky, but it lacked something, maybe music). I guess TW1 had a stronger atmosphere and mood, but I felt TW2 had a stronger story and stronger characters. Which is why I prefer the latter, but of course still love the former.

The first one of course. I would like the 1st with the engine of the second for the reasons the other guyz said above. Geralt is more like a politician in the 2nd than a monster slayer... I miss the mystery of the 1st game and the more magical world of it.

While I am thoroughly enjoying the new game, my heart lies with the original. As previously stated, it had more "atmosphere" and i really miss all the critters (btw, there are crowns and rats in the new game, but that's it ... and we hear frogs). I also wish there was more monster variety in the new game.

I was disappointed in TW2. It was a good game, actually. It was a VERY good game; most games can only dream of being this good. But I didn't fall in love with it, the way I did with TW1.

The graphics are stunning, and some of the cutscenes and special effects are really jaw-dropping. There are a lot of "Wow!" moments in TW2, and I imagine that most players will like TW2 better than TW1. But I'm not most players. I wish I were, actually, but sadly, I'm not.

The game is more streamlined this time around, and it's focused on the story to such an extent that we don't get to know most of the characters all that well. Of course, there are an awful lot of nasty characters who I don't WANT to know, and that's part of it -- there aren't very many likeable characters in TW2. But there are a few characters who seem like they'd be interesting to get to know, but we don't actually get to know them. The characters are all business this time around.

I'd love to know more about Cedric -- an elf we meet in Chapter 1 -- but he gives information here and a quest there, but he doesn't just hang out and talk. I don't feel like we got to know him anywhere near as well as we got to know, say, Vaska, and nowhere near as well as we got to know Vincent or Kalkstein. Ves is one of the few decent people on the Roche path, and although we get to have sex with her, I don't feel like we get to know her all that well. More than any other character, though.

The only people I had strong feelings for (well, strong POSITIVE feelings for; I manage to hate Henselt and Dethmold just fine :teeth: ) were the characters who repeated from TW1. But even there, it seemed as if Triss didn't have much to say. And Zoltan and Dandelion had a lot to say about various quest-related things, but it didn't seem as if there was much opportunity to just hang out with them and chat. Everybody was so damned focused on business that it didn't feel as if we all had a chance to breathe. In the beginning, I'd go back to the Inn (where T, Z, and D were) to talk to them every time something important happened, but they never had any new conversation, so eventually I stopped trying to talk to them.

The thing is -- conversation is cheap. A game company can get an unpaid intern to write conversation for them. :hmmm: I guess voice-acting it all is expensive, though. I got the sense that whoever wrote the game this time around knew how expensive voice-acting is, whereas whoever wrote the first game didn't know. :)

And I hated the interface. I wanted to be able to click on things, not have to run over them. Geralt kills a monster the size of a house, then loses its body in the tall grass? WTF?

And I hated the flashback art. I thought it was ugly, ugly, ugly. I really enjoyed the flashbacks from the first time around, but this time around, yuck. They even made Yennefer ugly, and she's supposed to be stunningly gorgeous.

It's a very good game -- really, it is -- but to me, at least, it didn't have the charm or the heart of TW1. (Part of the problem may be that I played the Roche path the first time around, since what he wanted to do at the end of Chapter 1 seemed more crucial than what Iorveth wanted to do. But I hated just about everybody on the Roche path, once Chapter 2 started. I've started playing the Iorveth path, and I'm liking it better. Vergen is more fun to hang around in than Henselt's camp -- I love the dwarves! -- and you get to work with Zoltan for one quest. So even though taking out the Chapter 1 bad guy seems like a more important aim than rescuing a bunch of bad guys from a prison barge, I recommend the Iorveth path.)

I thought they concentrated more on the surface -- stunning graphics and wow cutscenes -- and less on the depth and heart. And that saddens me. Depth and heart were what made TW1 such a jewel. TW2 is a good game. But I'm not in love this time around.

Edited to add:

I also didn't like the combat much this time around, whereas I loved it in TW1. I never got tired of killing things in TW1, partly because I thought the combat system had just the right level of user input and partly because Geralt's combat animations were so beautiful. Even though a powered-up Igni was very strong, I rarely used it because I loved watching Geralt use his sword so much. The grace, the athleticism, the sheer beauty -- I played TW1 a LOT, and even after many hundreds of hours with the game, I still loved watching Geralt's combat animations.

In TW1, I thought the relationship between what my fingers were doing on the mouse and what Geralt was doing on the screen was clear and precise, and it was easy to get what I wanted done. And the strong-fast-group style and steel vs. silver sword -- plus clicking at the end of every combo -- made me feel as if I had plenty of input, without making me feel as if I had to micromanage Geralt's every move. In TW2, I didn't see a clear and precise relationship between what I was doing and what Geralt was doing. It often seemed as if the animations were doing something on their own, unrelated to what my fingers were doing. And the animations were no longer gorgeous to watch. I hated rolling, so I simply played on Easy, so that I wouldn't have to. But combat was no longer the pleasure it had been in TW1.

I also really missed my favorite Low Isometric camera mode; over-the-shoulder mode makes me motion-sick. And it's hard to have a good time while you're motion-sick. :whatthe:

And the alchemy system! I loved alchemy in TW1; I thought CDPR nailed alchemy the first time around. Then in TW2, they decided 1) That potions could only be drunk during meditation, and Geralt couldn't mediate if there were monsters nearby, and 2) That potions would last for five minutes. EITHER #1 OR #2 would have made sense, but both together meant that potions were pretty much useless, except for scripted boss fights.

I think that TW2 is a stunning achievement in many ways. But it's an achievement that leaves me cold and that makes me feel distant from the game. I thought TW1 was also a stunning achievement, but THAT was an achievement that drew me in and made me want more. It was warm, not cold, and it drew me in, in a way that TW2 -- for all its polish -- can't do.
Want to be IN a computer game? I'm making one, and I want a picture of you! See here for details.

I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.

I've also made a bunch of mods that fix bugs, kill annoyances or tweak gameplay; you can get those at the Witcher Nexus.

I think they are both amazing attempts at story telling combining with great gameplay. There is something missing though in TW2 and I am not sure how I can put my finger on it. But definitely I guess the world feels a bit more incomplete with the missing animals and what not in the day to day medieval life. I also think that in Flotsam in the jungle the number of monsters that prowl there are quite small. I think the TW1 story was a great introduction in to the world of the Witcher and TW2 definitely builds on top of that Things I would ask the authors to improve would be gosh I dunno, I have adapted quite well to the Inventory management screen and the Character development screen. I do like the meditate and plan out what potions and prepare your weapons option before going in to battles and they are quite challening. The only thing i would change is instead of getting 1 talent per level up, to change it to 2 or something. I am one of those people that really enjoy collecting XP and making the character as powerful as I can and constant evolution of the character. That said I am very early in the game right now and still have over 2 more acts to finish.

I think I prefer TW2, because I had a hard time to really enjoy the first one, I mean, I love the game, characters, story etc.. But the gameplay was.. I don't know, it felt not right(Unreal engine). And I don't have that feeling with the witcher 2 because they made their own engine for the game. While I really miss the fact that allot of elements are missing in the TW2 en the length of the game is too short, I prefer TW2 because I enjoyed playing it more.

What I want to see is a TW1 remake in the RED Enginge ! :D :D
(or some kickass story related TW2 dlc)

They both were good. TW2 is a lot harder and does require you to prepare for battle much more with potions and such, but both story lines are great.

I do miss Kalkstein and Vivaldi and the woman from Vizima (Can't remember her name).

@ Corylea
Great post!

I can understand your position and it's certainly valid, though I do not share it.
Ironically, I never really really cared about Dandelion and Zoltan in TW1. But I did in TW2 (especially on Iorveth's path). Part of that is I felt they were better integrated in the plot.

I also felt that TW2 had a much stronger cast of characters. In fact I can't think of a major character I am indifferent to (the ultimate sin of any character imo). I do not recall any game with a cast I appreciated that much.

And I felt the convos introduced and developed the characters well enough. They might have been more "business" like than the previous game, but I don't think that necessarily comes in the way of character development. The characters we meet are highly dedicated to something afterall.

I miss stuff like Shani's party and sure TW1 was slower. But that makes sense imo. TW2's story could not afford being slow, we are afterall dealing with an urgent conspiracy, and volatile political changes.

I do share the sentiment though that TW1 had a certain charm to it that TW2 did not have.

I'm going to give a very slight nod to TW1. I love TW2, but kind of like Corylea:
--liked the excellent story, but characters could be more developed
--didn't hate the UI, but preferred clicking to stepping-and-then-clicking on items

I liked the flashback sequences, however. I don't think they were necessarily better than the stills in TW1, but the shadow-puppet aesthetic was appropriate for the context.
