Our Community Fan Translations

21.04.2013 @ 15:34 #681

Hi guys!

I'm writing a thesis that is based on your fan traslation of the witcher, especially the translation of humour. I have a huge request for the people that translated it.

Can you tell me from which languages the book was translated? I've read the topic and I have seen that Spanish and Slovakian were mentioned. Could some of you tell me specifically which parts or chapters of books were translated from which language?

Thanks in advance!

zhander: Thank you so much for the revised editions! A small request - could you please add chapter marks to the mobi files?

I finished blood of elves just now. I could continue reading but I don't like to read books online. =(

Hmm apparantly I can put the books on my mobile phone to read thanks to Zhander. This way I can just read in bed before I go to sleep. :)

I would, but I honestly can't/don't know how to get chapter marks to work -__-

Oh, and I am going through and fixing grammar errors (not punctuation so much)/ things that don't make sense in all the books now - I noticed there were quite a few.

There are multiple choices here, choose one:

  • Download and edit directly the epub versions I have provided earlier (the application Sigil is brilliant for this, with full editing and Search-&-Replace functionality etc.). My versions are already typographically correct down to the tiniest detail, with chapter marks and metadata and a lot of other small details I can provide you with if you wish. The only thing missing is correction of typos and the names you mentioned, which is the fabulous new thing you're bringing to the table! :) Converting these epub files to HTML and mobi is a piece of cake.
  • Fool around with the structure detection/TOC detection settings in Calibre. I know enough XPath to theoretically make it work, but I can't get the results I want. The easiest way might be to edit the HTML yourself and add some empty tag with a unique class before each chapter, and set Calibre to detect chapters and create pagebreaks at these locations (using XPath).
  • Create epub files and add Chapter marks in Sigil.
  • Send me the epub files as you finish them, and I will try to add chapter marks in Sigil.

Feel free to take my epub files for a spin. Having a single set of books which are correct in all respects is of course an advantage for the whole community. If you find them typographically lacking, or if it is too much work for you to make the changes here, continue editing your own versions and choose one of the other options. :)

First I have to give my thanks to all of those who spent time working on these translations, you are some dedicated fans. I immensely enjoyed the translation of "Sword of Destiny", I felt it to be so well done I would have absolutely no problems actually paying for it were it the version published. I'm finding "The Time of Contempt" to be much more difficult to work my way through, however, the abrupt tense changes and sentence structure continue to pull me out of - that might just be me, though.

I have the same thing. It's a bit hard to follow along because it feels like the character(s) are all over the place. One moment they are here, one moment they are there. Especially chapter 4 has quite some tense changes, which are mistakes. This way you are being confused if something happened or is happening. Without giving any spoilers: I'm talking about the events on Thanedd island. It does not help that there's Gors Velen, Which has a bridge connected to the magical Thanedd Island, which is divided by three main areas called: Aretuza, Garstang and Loxia. Not to mention remembering all the names of people. But I did some research and I get it now... I think. Also: I don't see Thanedd Island on the witcher world map. (Or maybe there's a reason. In that case nevermind)

Anyway, I am very grateful for the fan translations!

I am correcting that book right now - There are over 450 errors to fix. I would've be done a lot sooner but...life happens.

You sure it's worth it? The official english release is just around the corner. By then the fan translations are a big no here I would assume. But I wouldn't know the policy on this.

The English translation of Times of Contempt has been "just around the corner" for several years now, so if they wanna keep correcting the fan translation they might as well. Just in case.

Hey
Can someone please send me a download link for the fan translation of The Last Wish? I'm writing a thesis that compares the Polish original with the two translations (fan and official) but I can't find the fan one anywhere.
Can you help me?

There's no fan translation of "The Last Wish". You can buy it on Amazon or other bookstore.

I've made over 450 changes to "The Time of contempt" - It's uploaded now.

The only links that will work from now on are the .mobi & .html files - I didn't feel like fixing the .docx files.

Good job. I finished the book not too long ago. It really needed a lot of fixes as some lines were badly written. As in you had to read over it 3 times and guess what was supposed t be written there. :P

I am now at Baptism of Fire. The more I read, the more sense The Witcher 2 makes to me.
Either that, or with what I already know from the Witcher 2, I understand the books more. Or just both.
