Been playing the game again, investingating the parties. At some point I had the option of accusing Kalkstein of being guilty. Having played the game before I knew he wasn't, but I accused him anyway. Now he's pissed and tells me to shove off every time I enter his house. I have now disproven everybody else, and probably gone as far as I can in showing distrust in the "not-quite" detective (about to enter graveyard now). I've now suspiciously asked him about the new rugs, my wild medallion, the girls, and map.
Will Kalstein being pissed have some nasty long-term effect so I should reload, or can I just fly with it?
PS: It's very interesting to see how different this part of the game has been since my first playthrough. Then I went 'dunno' until the guy showed up dead.

Accusing Kalkstein of being guilty

I think I accused him in my first play too. I remember all were fine when I finished chapter 2. I'm not 100% sure though.

Yes, I think Kalkie will sort of "reset" for the next chapter.
I let Javed "fool" me the second time I played the game. Worked out fine.

I'm not finished with the chapter yet (and lost an hour of gameplay to a damn crash while in the swamp), but it seemed to sort itself out when I found the guy dead. Went to Kalkstein and instead of him just telling me to get out (he still did that) I also had the option to tell him I found out who the guilty was. He seemed to 'reset' after that. He is an important character after all, so it wouldn't work at all if I couldn't even talk to him for the remainder of the game.
It was certainly a more interesting progression of events than the first time when I was just walking around not having a clue who might have done it. Let Ramsmeat live too, which I hope will have something positive consequences.

I accused Kalkstein in my current run of the game. Geralt was fooled by Jhaved right up until he gets to the tower. Even more surprising were my dealings with Ramsmeat. I thought there was a quest bug because I couldn't push the story forward until I killed Ramsmeat, as the journal instructed. I knew that couldn't be right. I've never actually killed him in any previous playthrough. He's major player, he can't be killed....right?
Lol. So finally I killed the poor bastard and the plot progressed. I was not expecting that at all. Should have known better, this is The Witcher I'm playing.
