I'm new to the game and in the Crypt (act 1). I'm struggling to kill the three gouls and can't see what's going on. How do I get a torch/cat's potion?

To make a cat potion you need rebis and 2 x quebrith (and strong, cheap alcohol of course). Ones you make potion and use it Geralt will remember how to make it for ever.

The first time I played the game I used a torch for that mission. It was slower, of course, but it still did the trick (it was on easy, mind you)

Torches you can get by ransacking homes

As long as you have the herbalism skill where you can identify herbs. While herbs are plentiful in act 1 a big selection of different herbs are not. To make cat you would need Balisse fruit and celandine

Alternatively you can download the "Stuff" mod (I think that was its name). Then you can use cat vision whenever you want without needing a potion. You can meditate wherever you want (as will be possible in TW2). And you have access to the storage whenever you want.

You can advance and then retreat drawing out one at a time. It's not that hard but all three at once can be err interesting : )
