I wish to buy The Last Wish in English (I think it's the only book in english) for my girlfriend to read, will a female like it?

Any female fans?

Sure! There are plenty of female fans of Sapkowski and stories about Geralt.

If she likes fantasy, she should love it. If she doesn't like nonexisting worlds, beasts, magic etc. (everything what stands for fantasy)... well, she probably won't like any fantasy book, no matter how well written.

Oh great.

The only fantasy books she likes are Lord of The Ring.

Since then, because I play fantasy game, I have been trying to buy her books that can relate to what I play, for example, Neverwinter Nights, I bought her Drizzit's books, which are nothing more than an egotistic self mastering adventure for the writer's own character. In short, Lord of The Rings are great, while Drizzit's books are total crap.

From my experience of the game, The Witcher's world seems deep and dark, I am interested in hoping that; although there are elves and such, but it's a good "logical" and "realistic" as well.

Do you think she would like the book?

She may. How can I tell? I haven't read the English translation. I heard that it had.. its problems. Still, I think that at least one story inthe book she should like - the "On the edge of the world" - not the oficial translation, no idea how is it called by the translator;)

It's hard to tell... I'd say Sapkowski is more mature than stories about Drizztt (you mean Salvatore, right?). The characters are more complex and developed, they have "moral issues" etc. It's not just about killing hundreds of goblins and saving the world ;) In my opinion Sapkowski is much better than Salvatore, its another league. English translation may be a bit worse, but I don't think it can be much different than the original. Nevertheless, I'd tell you - give it a shot, it's worth it.

/edit
Don't forget that the game is based on books (which were bestsellers for many years in Poland), not the other way.

I can only tell you that all of the fantasy books I've ever read were either by Tolkien or Sapkowski and I loved both, even though I might have liked AS because I prefer dark and unpleasant literature in general ;) and Sapkowski definitely represents this sort. So as you can see I'm no specialist in the matter of fantasy but I know something about books and I can assure you Sapkowski's novels are first-rate ;)

And yes, I'm female if there were any doubts about it. Hello everyone by the way  :)

Many thanks for your advice.

I would like to ask further: From the game, The Witcher totally kick ass and have super (mutant) power, and get all the girls from all over the lands. This reminds me of Drizzit who walks around and get every girls who fancy him and men would give magical items to him for no reason and for free, and of course he can win fights, and a lot of the time, very unbelievable and immaturely.

Is The Last Wish anything like that? Is it closer to LOTR, or closer to Salvatore's shits?

Neiter :)

It's not a fairy tale, as LOTR is, neither it is a hack-and-slash story... It's just... Sapkowski  ;D Just read it and see it for yourself :)

If anything, it's more similar to George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire".

My wife read all books by Sapkowski and liked them very much which was very surprising because she never before (or after) looked at anything "fantasy" (like Lord of the Rings etc)... So Sapkowski must be shomehow appealing to women who even don't like fantasy at all.

I'm a great fan or rather I should say a worshipper od Sapkowski's Saga.  :)
Putting aside the story itself, I simply love the language, the cultural connotations, the humour

In my opinion (and I am both: a woman and a fantasy fan) Sapkowski may be highly apprieciated among us due to the fact, that there are some feminist issues that appear in his books. Besides, almost all the female characters in the Saga are indepentent, active, etc., especially in comparison e.g. with Tolkien (books), where they were only a background to the main characters (maybe not counting Eovyn and Galadrielle but only for some part of LOTR).

Actually, while Geralt is the main character of the short stories, princess Ciri and socreress Yennefer become characters equal in importance to Geralt in the novel series.

Hey, I'm female and I just luuuuuuuuv the whole Saga. Though reading it from The Blood of the Elves maybe wasn't the best idea, as I thought the short stories are not so important.... Yeah, stupid me  ;D
I'm a fantasy freak - give me a book with the magic word written somewhere on its cover, and I will devour it  ;) But I'm far from ordinary, so this brutal, stinking and unique world is just for my liking (hope I didn't screw this :P).

I love Sapkowski's books!!! I've read The Witcher several times and each time I like it more:) Sapkowski has also written a trilogy with the main character - Reinmar from Bielawa. The book has similar sense of humour, but there's less magic.
I have also read LOTR but it hasn't impressed me so much.
Now, I love fantasy, thanks to The Witcher of course:)
