[Act I] How do I win a battle in this game ???

18.09.2009 @ 20:27 #1

Ok,
I have played Oblivion and Fallout 3 and others, but I cannot understand how to win battles in this game when I am attacked by five people immediately when I come through a door. I can't arm myself beforehand, I can't choose a 'sign' beforehand. I do not see anyway to prepare for the battle in any way.
I am reduced to 'dead' in ten seconds!  I have tried to win the battle with the Salamanders in the abandoned house at least twelve times. It is very frustrating! I hope the rest of this game is not like this !!!

Do you drink a Swallow potion before you enter? Do you use a whetsone or grindstone (if it's already available) as blade enhancement?
Try to jump over them (double click behind the Salamandras), us Igni on them and use the group style.
I can see what you see not, Visions milky then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone, whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be, shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind – cast down into the Halls of the Blind…

unless he plays on hard I dont think its neccery to use any potion that early in the game (its not very hard). Are you really used to the battle system? All you need to do is pause the game (space bar), then you can click on whatever you want. Chose the sing u want (I would take Aard) and your weapon (ofc the iron witcher sword), and you can win. This shouldn't be a problem as geralt can take quite a lot of hits befor he falls, and killing one enemy is about 2-3 combos, so unless you didn't understand the basics you shouldn't have problems. Maybe a lower difficulty incase you still can't mange?

Thou I agree its a bit of a bad design to suddenly stumble upon 5 opponents without being able to do some preprations befor...

When I first started playing, I tried to click the row of stuff on the left to draw my sword or to change signs, and I died a lot.  (This was partly because I got so caught up in things that I forgot you could pause. ;D)  You really, really need the keyboard shortcuts!

HIt "q" and Geralt draws his steel sword (the only one you have for this battle).  Press "z" for Strong Style (for a single, fairly slow oponent), "x" for Fast Style (for a single, quick oponent) or "c" for Group Style (three or more opponents close together).  Press "1" to switch to the Aard sign or "4" to switch to Igni.

So, as Petra says, drink a swallow before you open the door, and if you have a whetstone or grindstone, use it on your sword.  You might want to drink a Tawny Owl, as well.

You click on the door, the inside of the hut loads, and you're surrounded by bad guys.  Hmm.  Do you have anything that could get the bad guys to back off for a minute?  How about an Aard?  If Aard is already selected, just right-click (if you have something else selected, type "1" and then right-click), and that'll blast the Salamanders back for long enough to draw your sword in peace.  If you've upgraded Aard, it may even knock one or more of them down.

Hit "q" to draw your sword.  If one of the Salamaders has been knocked down by your Aard, click on him, and Geralt will perform a finishing move that takes him out with one blow.  If they're all still standing, then you need Group Style.  If it's not already selected, hit "c."  The game calculates how you hit everybody in the group depending on which member of the group you aim at.  So if you have a couple of guys who look like low-level minions and one guy who looks like a boss, click on a minion when using group style, since he'll be easier to hit.

The swallow should keep your health (Vitality) recharging.  If you've taken a Tawny Owl, your Endurance should be recharging fairly quickly, too, which will allow you to either blast them with another Aard when you need a bit of breathing room or hit them with an Igni, for some damage AND -- and probably more importantly -- for the distracting effect of pain and incineration.  If you set all the guys on fire, several of them will be too overcome by this to attack you, even if they don't die from the effect, which lets you kill the ones that are still fighting and get to the other ones later.

This battle is very winnable!

Oh, and there's a battle coming up soon that many people find very hard, but it is very winnable, too.  If you have any trouble with the big boss at the end of this chapter, just come by again -- we have a lot of advice for how to win that one, too!

Thanks to all for the replies!
I did win it (the 'jump over' really helped. I am simply not used to the combat system yet (I have to think too much about the 'key combos'!
Thanks for all the hints for the quick keys. The documentation I have does not show anything about 'walking' vs 'running'.
There is only an electronic manual with the Enhanced Version (but a nice 'walkthrough' book.
BTW, I did win the boss level (but I don't know HOW I won it!). I am just not the level where the fights are instinctive.
What a great game!

They don't tell you how to make Geralt walk because he doesn't walk.  You can find all the commands there are here.

Thanks!  I thought as much. But I just cannot see why they would not include that since the gameworld is so well done.
For myself, when I can walk, I enjoy the game a lot better as I can 'take my time' and explore everything.
Ah well. It is just the first RPG I have played that did it this way.

In Flash's insane difficulty Mod one can install and bind a walk mode to keyboard key. Just thought I would pass that along.

Okay well first off, I'd drink a swallow before going in there. The reason you might not be winning is because you're probably fighting stronger Salamanders. So you need to press z to get out the strong steel, and then just wipe em out one by one. The swallow will keep you healed so you don't die in the middle of it. It also depends on what game mode you selected. Easy-you should be able to do it without Alchemy Medium-Alchemy is very helpful Hard-Alchemy is required to survive.
