Hi, I have got the problem that I haven't finished my side quests yet ( e.g. Temptation or Alp Contract) but started "Free Elves"! Every time I try to go back to the village to go to the blacksmith (and give him his stuff) Dandelion appears and tells me that the elves have taken all the hostages etc. So I cannot finish my other side quests where the people of the village are needed for! Is there no chance of getting those village people back ? What do I have to do? Do I have to avoid the elves until I have finished all the other quests? This is getting really annoying coz I am missing out all the experience points...
Help :)

you have to avoid Rayla and finish any other quests prior to talking to her :peace:

"Free Elves" resp. Rayla trigger the final phase of this chapter and you can't finish any unsettled cases anymore. You can't even buy booze at the inn to prepare potions.
I can see what you see not, Visions milky then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone, whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be, shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind – cast down into the Halls of the Blind…

Take a previous save and finish all side quests ;) When you return from the Black Tern after you killed Dagon and received the Aerondight from the Lady of the Lake, Rayla awaits you at the lake side. So I would settle everything and then kill Dagon and get ready for the Free Elves quest.

This should be possible. After you killed Dagon the next phase is to tell the Lady that you defeated him and she rewards you. If you don't talk to her and leave the island you should finish undone quests. But I'm not sure because I always had Dagon's kill as last mission of this chapter and talked to the lady aferwards ;D

In the game's defense, it does warn you as good as it can about this. I think it's Dandelion that says something along the lines of 'you better tie up any loose ends before you go (to black tern island?)' since when you return that's when you can't finish any side quests etc.

It must be right before the 'point of no return' as it were. I seem to remember it being in the actual Murky Waters village, he may also mention something about Berengar wanting to see you one last time aswell. That happened, then i went to Black Tern, fought Berengar, then went to the alter and fought Dagon, then got Aerondight from the Lady. Then i returned to Lakeside, and Rayla was there with the Order troops.
That's how i remember it :)

BTW, just for interest sake, doing the bread quest is no problem at all, you can do that one right away if you like ... the only one to put off a bit is Ripples.
typically i do all the quests except those 2 first in act IV (i also do parts of ripples -- up to but not including the battle with Dagon)
:peace:
